Like how much $$$ would one need to order the d*mn thing?
How hard it is to aquire one in the first place?
And what kind of federal license would you need to have to own it?
Lastly, what process would need to be carried out to aquire this license?

I'm guessing a kind of military license, $5,000, and a due process to order, ship, and receive as well as shipping payment. General Dynamics doesn't just hand out Gau-19s to just anyone, although that would be pretty convenient. And i'm guessing extensive training (military) and testing to aquire this particular license. I'm also guessing that from its little popularity and being widely unkown that it may be easier than i think, still difficult, but easier to aquire than that of an m134.

below, I get a little off here, so read if you please but you don't have to cause it's not part of my question, just some facts and links, i'd rather have my questions answered.

My reasons for wanting to aquire this weapon is for a last defense for when the tyranny of our government reaches to the point of an absolute dictatorship and we merge into the rest of the worlds
revolution in the act to rebuild nations, that this will help defend myself and my family, an ar-15 won't cut it. Also, because of its 3 barrels and ability to change the R.O.F. of the weapon, can help preserve ammo than its 6 barreled counterpart (m134), and speaking of ammo, it has a larger round than its counterpart making the gau-19 (50-BMG) better than the m134 (7.62 x 51). And although the .50 is more expensive than the other, because of the lower fire rate of the gau-19, in the long run, i save, cause its the m134's 5,000 rpm Vs. the gau-19's 1,000 rpm rate (or selectable 1,250 rpm, 1,300 rpm, and 2,000 rpm). So as you can see here, my reasons are very good reasons. My final reason is because, admit it, it's an awesome weapon, the machine in my favorite game series Halo for the XBox is modeled after the gau-19.

gau-19 is the 4th one down

Answer
It might be possible to purchase one from a foreign military entity. You can buy MIG-29 fighter jets from former soviet republic air forces. Some are for sale for around 5 million dollars. You might not be able to get a GAU-19 since they do not just sell them to anyone. If you are really that determined to get one you could use 3d scanners to help reverse engineer the GAU-19 in 50 caliber and produce one for yourself. If in the end with all of the legal paperwork ,and tax stamps you can have a fully automatic GAU-19. If you cannot get your hands on a GAU-19 you could make something similar that could do the same job ,but reverse engineering an GAU-19 is probably your best bet since you probably will not be able to get one imported or purchase one from general dynamics. Remember you will have to get the proper manufacturing licenses from the ATF.

Is there anyone out there that thinks Windows Vista is an improvement over Windows XP?

JD

I DON'T want to hear from people who hate on Vista. I've already heard the negatives.

I want to hear only from people who think Vista is better, and why they feel that way.

Answer
I've been running Windows Vista Premium for about a month now since I got my new computer. I'm what some call a power user and use my computer constantly for both work and play. Overall I actually do think it is an improvement over XP in a lot of ways and have really enjoyed using it so far. The first thing thats really cool (and the one many people are talking about) is the new interface called Aero. Basically if you have a computer capable of using this new interface you are going to really love it! (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista#Hardware_requirements to see if your computer can handle it) it has a lot of nice glass and transparency effects, a cool 3d replacement for alt-tab switching, a really great sidebar that holds gadgets like clocks, calenders, radio stations, news, etc.. (similar to Mac's widgets) and a bunch of other nice things. I also like the fact that the 'start button' no longer has the word start on it, I always felt like that was treating me like some kind of idiot. You can check some screenshots to get an idea of what it looks like but I'd recommend a video or something so you can see it in motion. Aside from visual improvements there are some other great additions. I love the new search feature, it's easily accessible from the start menu and is a massive improvement over XP's search function. It lets you customize your search in a lot of the same ways and is extremely fast and efficient. I can search an entire hard drive (over 350gb in size) for a single file and get my results within a minute instead of the 10+ min it took on XP. The best features though are mainly on the security front, now when a program tries to install or change something behind the scenes Vista will ask you if you want to block it or let it through. While some find this annoying it is def better for your PC in the long run. The new firewall also does the same, every time a program wants to access the internet it asks you if you want to block or allow it and then remembers your choice for the future. There's also a built in anti-spyware program called Windows Defender that is nice to have. The other thing I love is that they took all the great things about Windows XP Media Center Edition, improved on them and then included it into Vista Premium and Ultimate. Because I have a tv card in my system I have been absolutely loving this! Not only is it great for watching TV but you can use it like a DVR for rewinding and pausing live TV, setting it up to record a show every week when its on like a Tivo and more. It also pulls a guide from the internet that will show you exactly whats on and when and functions like a built in Tv-Guide. Overall the media center is feature packed and easy to use. As far as other entertainment goes I have also not been disappointed. I've been able to play almost all of my favorite 3d games without problems which was a concern for me at first. Movies and mp3's also work without problems in Media Player 11. Another big aspect for me was how the programs I use for work would function. These included things like Microsoft Office and a whole lot of graphic design software (mostly adobe software) I found that everything installed and worked as expected and have been very satisfied with all my softwares performance. My final concern was how my peripherals would work. To get my HP PhotoSmart d5069 printer to work I couldn't use the included setup disc and instead had to go to HP's site and download a Vista driver and then all was fine. My external usb hard drive worked right off the bat as well as my USB xbox360 game pad and MS finger print scanner. The only thing I couldn't get to work was my Genius drawing tablet, I'm hoping Vista drivers will come out for it soon though. Basically I was initially skeptical about going to Windows Vista so early after its release and prob wouldn't have upgraded to it for a long time on my last PC, however since it came on a new computer I thought I'd give it a fair chance to prove itself. I told myself if I hated it I would just install Windows XP onto it and I was happy to find that I really liked it and found it an improvement overall. I would def recommend it if you have a computer that meets the system requirements. Def ignore people who have a strong opinion on it but have not even tried it for themselves. Everyone hates Microsoft and everyone knows it. Also I think many people are uneasy and afraid of change, especially OS changes. They get comfortable with software after using it for so many years. I liked XP to but Windows XP has been out forever, and was not without its problems in the beginning (think pre service pack 2). It's time for something fresh and new! I think Vista is much better off then XP in many areas, you've got to see it for yourself and use it for a while to understand. Also make sure to look at this product for what it is and not just by who makes it. Hope this helps you!

Do I have to pre-order Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance online in order to get the AR cards?

3d scanner for 3d printing

3d scanner for 3d printing image

Michael

Do I have to pre-order online, or can I just pre-order from the store?

Answer
Easiest way to find out for sure is to ask the physical store, and if they say no, just pre-order online.

However, I've been told that you can essentially cheat the system by printing off scanned copies of the AR cards, if you can get the right colours. The AR scanner just looks for a particular colour pattern.

If you want to test it out, find a decent image of an AR marker that comes with the 3DS, print it off, and see if you can use it for those Nintendo character photo things.

Where can i get someone to make a sculpture/carving/3dmodel or something similar?

Joseph W

I want to get a sculpture of my wife. I was wondering if there is a place in sydney where i can send in a picture and they can make it.

Im not necessarily looking at a 'sculpture', but just a 3d model of her. any material will do.

Thanks,
Joe

Answer
if you want a halfway decent 3D model or portrait bust you need to take photos of her from different views. A single photo is not giving sufficient information. So I don't think there is any place which would make you a 3D portrait of a single photo.
If you want a computer 3D model of her, there are things called 3D laser scanner, they can make some kind of 3D model of anybody within minutes (though it won't be suitable to be 3D printed, and it has problems with hair and of course the person has to be present to be scanned). One of the universities in Sydney probably has one, if not in art then in engineering. Don't know if they let anybody use it, maybe if you can find a student willing to do the job.

With current 3D Printing technology how many consumer products that we use in the would be able to be created through the use of 3D Printing?.

Answer
The limits are our imaginations.

I went to an exhibition last year by new designers. One of them had created a pair of high-heeled shoes, very elegant and intricate with flexible straps and solid sole and heel, she had printed them with a 3D printer in one working. Her concept was that a customerâs feet could be scanned with a 3D scanner and the shoe design adapted to exactly fit her feet, the shoes would be printed and delivered to her address.

I saw the movie 9 and the theatre gave me a green button with "Ask Me About This 9.9.09" & an odd design on it... It doesn't appear to be a 3D thing, nor a "hidden picture"... and I couldn't see how it correlates to the movie... does anyone know what the heck this button is about?
I'm just wondering what this "design" has to do with anything... it never appeared in the movie (that I noticed anyway). It looks like a weird square barcode...

Answer
This type of barcode is an Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) which is a barcode for a website. When I went to the movie 9, I was able to pull out my smartphone (Android G1) and use the application, Barcode Scanner, to scan the barcode with the phone's camera, which then opened the phone's browser to a trailer video of the movie.

How far is the automated 3-D segmentation of Brain MRI efficient compared to manual segmentation?

Sandhya

We are doing a project on automated 3-D segmentation of brain MRI using MATLAB. We would like to know the extent to which "Surf" commands are efficient in producing reliable segmented 3-D image. The accuracy level, how much it is better compared to manual segmentation. We need statistical detail, kindly help us....

Answer
This correspondence deals with the development of an
automated 3-D segmentation of Brain MRI. The proposal is a
model-based approach for accurate, robust, and automated
tissue segmentation of brain MRI data of single as well as
multiple magnetic resonance sequences. The main contribution
of this study is that we employ an edge-based geodesic active
contour for the segmentation task by integrating both image
edge geometry and voxel statistical homogeneity into a novel
hybrid geometricâstatistical feature to regularize contour
convergence and extract complex anatomical structures. We
validate the accuracy of the segmentation results on simulated
brain MRI scans of both single T1-weighted and multiple T1/
T2/PD-weighted sequences. When compared to a current stateof-
the-art region based level-set segmentation formulation,
our white matter and gray matter segmentation resulted in
significantly higher accuracy levels with a mean improvement
in Dice similarity indexes. Thus the development of the project
is done using MATLAB simulation for results.
A Hybrid Automated 3D Segmentation in Brain MRI -------------------------------------------------------- Advantages of a MRI scan
⢠MRI scanners are good at looking at the non-bony parts
or "soft tissues" of the body. In particular, the brain, spinal
cord and nerves are seen much more clearly with MRI
than with regular x-rays and CAT scans.
⢠Also, muscles, ligaments and tendons are seen quite well
so that MRI scans are commonly used to look at knees
and shoulders following injuries.
⢠A MRI scanner uses no x-rays or other radiation.
⢠A disadvantage of MRI is itâs higher cost compared to a
regular x-ray or CAT scan. Also, CAT scans are frequently
better at looking at the bones that MRI.

ATi FirePRO V 8200 vs. Ati HD 5970?

Questioner

Which is better? Are both of these cards one of the same? Like how the ATi FirePRO M74820 is based on the HD 5870MR?

So I'm a engineering student (Aerospace):

My plan:

I'm wanting a laptop for a multipurpose reason. Be it entertainment, school, research (either school or independent) or gaming (as i might not take my PS3). So this is what I'm planning to do:
What I know I will be doing is 3D modeling, simulation, physics simulation, HE Physics (might take a double major), Quantum Mechanics, Data crunching, Algorithms, Programming (both High and Low Level), image/video analysis, conversion of natural algorithms (Image, Audio, Video into pure data), research/analysis maybe on the unknown/unseen/beyond (hard to explain ), being able to customize and create specialized functions, hacking/cracking/modifying, etc. Now i don't want any flame wars, but i wanted to do my own research, even though i know for a fact we might have to use the supercomputers and such for projects in university. So i believe some nice people here told me that just get a powerful cpu and gpu to handle your personal research but don't depend on it or something like that

Also these are the programs I plan to utilize in uni:
ABAQUS ADAMS Software
Adobe Acrobat ANSYS ASPEN HYSYS
ASTOS AUTOMATED DESIGN Backups and Creating CD-ROMS
C/C++ Carleton Site License Software CES4
Course NewsGroups Course Web Pages E-Mail
Femap FORTRAN Gas Turbine 9
GESOP Internet Securiety Lab Access
LABVIEW LINUX Loftsman
LS-DYNA MAPLE MATHCAD
Mathematica MATLAB MSC SOFTWARE
MS OFFICE Nastran, Patran, ... Printing
PTC Pro Engineer Rapid Prototyping Scanner
STK Tecplot Technical Support

Also i talked to some students and they did useAutoCAD, 3DS max and stuff as well!

So which GPU will most likely help me? Also is a core 2 quad Q8200 enough? or do I really really need to get a intel i7?

Answer
None of the applications listed are especially demanding from a graphical standpoint, so your selection for the GPU would have to be based on some other graphic intensive programs you plan to run on the same computer.

The multi-core option appeal is also limited by how many concurrent applications you will run, unless you develop multi-threaded or parallel algorithms.
Still, a general rule of thumb is that one should get the most powerful machine you can reasonably afford, if anything to future-proof your investment as much as possible.

How do you know what short cuts to delete to help your PC to run faster?

coloriverh

I've heard that Windows XP takes up space with alot of useless files that you don't need once the program has been downloaded. Which are safe to delete? Thank you

Answer
These are the quickest ways to make your pc faster, if you need more help on how to do these, answers are a google away. I will just tell you what works.

A) Be sure you have at least 512 mb of ram. More may be overkill if you don't do a lot.

B) Use a good system cleaner like ccleaner, and make sure yoru startup entries are barebone, loading nothing except your antivirus, firewall, and messenger.

C) Use a good antivirus like AVG that doesn't hog system resources but has a nice and solid AV.

D) Use a spyware scanner like lavasoft adaware or spyboy search & destroy occasionally for scanning.

E) It really helps if your processor is at least 1.5 ghz or higher.

F) Get an ATI 2d/3d video accelerator. It can speed things up tremendously, especially working with video. More is better, but recommended you get no less than 32 mb for good performance.

G) In system properties, turn off everything under appearance except for using visual styles ( if you want things to be pretty), but if you just care about performance, uncheck that as well & use windows classic view.

H) Turn off windows updates, & if you have service pack 2, remove that as well, because MS never fix all the bugs, service pack 2 slows a pc to hell and breaks compatibility with many popular softwares.

I) Get a new harddisk, if your pc is older, the newer ones, (you want a 7,200 rpm or faster, as they can save and retrieve data over 2x faster than just a 5,400 one). I wouldn't select below about a 40 or 60 gig size, if you go too large, above 137, windows may or may not recognize it without somethig like maxtors free large drive fix.

J) If you dont use a background, it may make windows marginally faster, along with using black for your background.

K) If you have thousands of files, storing them in an external usb 2 drive will save you disk space and make windows substantially faster.

L) Turn off system restore, it slows things down. Some do not think it does, but system restore, in addition to doing it every 12 hours or so, depending on your settings, it does it for many popular apps when you install them such as media player 10. Over time, it can take many gigs of space and slow the pc down.

M) Use locate32 for finding files. It is free, finds files in a fraction of a second compared to over 15 min for windows when searching large drives, but may need you to undate its database before you start searching. Every time you mod or add lots of files, update it before searching, but it puts win search to shame, plus uses an easy interface similar to win 98.

N) Use startup manager from nirsoft. It is free, and not only checks for startup entries, but the entries show can all be deleted in mass, not just one at a time, plus it also shows all browser helpler objects. All browser helper objects may be deleted. Some debate about tea timer that comes with spybot search and destroy, or adobe but the truth is you can safely run your pc withotu any bho, as many do more harm than good anyway.

O) Google a free tool to stop prefetch. On xp, it needs to be cleaned out every so often. Some say it is harmless, but over time, when removing or testing large numbers of files, prefetch can get loaded with pointers to non existent files.

P) Remove things you dont need, such as windows messenger. Disable auto updater, turn off remote pc support, disable reboot on error, disable error reporting, turn off windows messenger spam service, disable grouping of taskbar items and hiding of system icons, turn off the rpc rebooting under all 3 of it's services.

Hope these helped. There may be others, but these should be more common ones that you can easily do with a bit of google.

Why dont airports use dogs instead of those 3d body scanners?

Dogs could detect everything those scanners do and more. Why not make them standard at every airport gate? My own theory is that you cant make a lot of money from dogs so there's no lobbyists advocating for dogs. You can make money off of those scanners ($150,000 a machine?). Is our security being subverted by washington lobbyists?

Answer
If each team had several dogs all trained in detecting different substances, the handlers could simply walk the dogs along the line of waiting passengers and remove anyone the dogs "hit" on. Forget technology, let nature expose them. I agree. Dogs not scanners.

Where can I buy a low cost 3d scanner?

Al

I need to scan in some parts to add to a CAD model. I'm really looking for something that's plug and play, where I drop the object into the scanner and it automatically puts it into a CAD packge. Any ideas?

Answer
What do you consider low cost? Good ones run around $10,000 (e.g., Roland) but you can find some for around $2,500 (e.g., Nextengine).

Michael

I would to become a web designer (graphic and coding) and what are the best universities/colleges for this in USA? with a BFA degree...

MAX!!?

Answer
In the USA, I recommend the following:

Pratt Institute, New York, NY;
Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI;
Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA;
California College of the Arts, San Francisco, CA;
University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), Los Angeles, CA;
Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI;
Otis College of Art and Design, Pasadena, CA;
Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA; and
Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA

Although I urge that you explore all of the above, I am more familiar with the following; and, thus, I have provided a bit of information.

*Art Center College of Design
1700 Lida Street
Pasadena, CA 91103
(626) 396-2373

The college offers programs leading to the BFA and BS Degrees, as well as graduate degrees. Its GRAPHIC DESIGN design program is first-rate and it includes excellent academic and technical offerings. For the increasingly computer-literate students who enter the Art Center, the idea of leadership is key. As the college notes, "these young designers will have opportunities to shape the development of a medium that is only beginning to fulfill its promise."
Please see:
http://www.artcenter.edu/accd/programs/u...

*Otis College of Art and Design
9045 Lincoln Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90045
(310) 665-6820

Otis College of Art and Design has a four year Bachelor of Fine Arts program that offers majors in seven areas: Communication Arts, DIGITAL MEDIA, Architecture/Landscape/Interiors, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Interactive Product Design and Toy Design. The cornerstone of the Otis program is the first year curriculum, which is called Foundation. Students from all majors take the core studio classes: drawing and composition, figure drawing, two and three dimensional design. In these integrated classes students build the art, design and creative skills and vocabulary that are the "foundation" of their subsequent studies and future work. Students enter their sophomore year well prepared to begin work in their major.

It has an excellent DIGITAL MEDIA program the primary goal of which is to strike a balance between traditional art and technology, and between individual vision and teamwork. By providing a fundamental understanding of digital tools and their creative applications, the department prepares graduates to meet the demands of a diverse and expanding job market. Leading designers for visual effects, Web, film, television, broadcast media, advertising, and video gaming guide the students.
Please see:
http://www.otis.edu/academics/index.html
http://www.otis.edu/academics/digital_me...

*University of California Los Angeles (UCLA)
405 Hilgard Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90095
(310) 825-3101

The UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture has a world-class
Department of DESIGN AND MEDIA ARTS. The School and Department take pride in educating responsible designers and artists for the information age by teaching the fundamentals of Design, Media, and the Arts, and encouraging experimentation and innovation. The Department provides an extensive education in Design and Media Arts practice, history and criticism; and it fosters a critical and creative exploration of emerging forms of visual communication, typography, interaction and interface design, ubiquitous computing, virtual environments, information spaces, networked agents and other pertinent areas of research.

Housed in the remarkable Broad Art Center, its facilities include the DMA Labs. These facilities feature high-end Windows and Macintosh computers; various peripherals, such as scanners, laser printers, and large-format Epson plotters; CD and DVD burners; and film recorders and digital video cameras. The Labs also provide access to a large library of graphics software in the areas of digital photography, illustration, interactive media, and 3D-modeling and animation. In addition to the main labs, the facilities include studio space for graduates and undergraduates, several faculty research labs, a blue screen room, a video facility supporting analog and nonlinear digital editing, audio mixing, and video capture, and two digital audio facilities. Wireless access is available to laptop users, and all the computers in the facilities are connected to the campus network, giving students individual access to DMA network resources and the Internet.

Try these. All are FREE......

Pencil : http://www.pencil-animation.org/
Pencil is an animation/drawing software for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. It lets you create traditional hand-drawn animation (cartoon) using both bitmap and vector graphics. Pencil is free and open source.

Synfig Animation Studio : http://synfig.org/
Synfig is a powerful, industrial-strength vector-based open-source 2D animation software package, designed from the ground-up for producing feature-film quality animation with fewer people and resources.2D Animation has traditionally been very expensive because every frame must be drawn by hand. Even with today´s digital inking and painting software, the process still relies on individuals hand-drawing each frame. This laborious task is called "tweening".Synfig eliminates the task of manual tweening, producing smooth, fluid motion without the animator having to draw out each frame individually. This allows you to produce 2D animation with fewer people while producing art of a higher quality.

Tapptoons Linetester : http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/tapptoons/index.htm
The Tapptoons Linetester enables animators to use a scanner or video camera (with compatible capture card) to input animation images into a standard PC and edit their work, adding soundtrack and color if they wish and to output the result as a Windows AVI. Can be used for puppet animation as well as drawn animation.

eDrawings : http://www.edrawingsviewer.com/
eDrawings is a freeware utility which will give the user the power to view, create and share 3D models and 2D drawings. eDrawings offers unique capabilities like point-and-click animations that make it easy for anyone with a PC to interpret and understand 2D and 3D design data.

What are the best keitai/clamshell/flip symbian phones?

Answer
I've seen one... i think what you're asking for is Fujitsu and Sharp
Fujitsu F04D and 11C some has fingerprint scanner. Can record HD Video and some can record both HD and 3D.

Some clamshell/flip phone have unlocked simcard and some need hypersim.
Even though its unlocked you cant use 3G internet, TV, and GPS. Its not an smartphone so no need for that. Since you can use awayfind. search it in google for more info. Its really useful.

The only flip phone you need to hack is the android or hybrid one, also in japan. So that you'll be able to use 3G internet since its a smartphone. I found one from j-phone and its 758$ i think...

How or where can I find a person or company with the ability to copy a sculpture with a CNC (or other) machine?

3d scanner with 3d printer
on Elements Of Practical Mechanism And Machine Tools: Thomas Baker, James ...
3d scanner with 3d printer image

customarti

I am wanting to reproduce a classic sculpture that I have, in a larger size. I believe that I have seen machines on TV that can accurately measure and reproduce a sculpture without an artist having to actually chiesel it. I just cannot afford thousands to have it hand carved, and I am not very particular about fine quality so long as it is reasonable. Can anyone direct me please?

Answer
there are 3D scanners and various rapid prototyping machines, ranging from printers to CNC machines. Though large scale printers are much rarer than large scale CNC.

If you google rapid prototyping services you'll find some companies. But it's most likely going to be much more expensive than looking if you can locate a larger version of your sculpture, particularly if yours is a popular one. A large run reproduction will always be cheaper than an unique custom fabricated item.

Can someone answer my questions about the 3-D printer?

Joey

Is there any limits to what it can make? Is it illegal to make certain things out of the 3D printer? If so,tell me. How much money is a 3D printer? If I put a puppy in the scanner, would it be able to replicate the puppy? How does the 3-D printer know if something should move or not?

Answer
Let me answer your questions one at a time:

1. Is there any limits to what it can make?
Right now, yes. In the future, no. The technology today is not advanced enough to make anything. The most common materials used now are plastic, resin, and recently the technology has grown to include metal. Food (lots of chocolate) has recently been printed as have organic materials such as stem cells. However, right now the biggest constraints of 3D printing is size. Soon one can conceivably print things as big as buildings, but for now most printers are relatively small (12in.X12in. though there are some much larger commercial printers). The future of 3D printing will also allow for printing on a molecular level, but for now the technology can only print in the micro scale.

2. Strictly speaking there are no laws against printing anything in 3D. However, laws exist that prohibit the manufacturing of certain goods and these apply to things that a 3D printer can conceivably make. An example of something that is illegal to print in the U.S. is a full gun. One can print parts of a gun legally, but cannot print a whole gun.

3. The cost of a 3D printer varies greatly. One can buy a 3D printer for the home for as little as $499. Commercial 3D printers cost much more and can run upwards of $30,000. With the continual advancement of the technology you can expect to see the prices drop as time goes on.

4. If you scan a puppy in 3D, a printer can print it in 3D. It would most likely be made out of plastic or resin though, not nice soft puppy fur.

5. 3D printers can print moving parts. When an item is programed into the software it maps out exactly where to lay down material. Because 3D printing is additive manufacturing it doesn't print the parts one by one, but instead prints the whole object layer by successive layer. If the programing is correct then moving parts can be included in the printed final product.

I just purchased the new Asus 10" netbook and im looking to download some games like Plants vs Zombies. What do you recommend I do? Would it be wise to purchase a memory stick because it is 1Gb memory and 160 hard drive. Any help would be great. i downloaded the free AVG too. is there any other things i should download to be safe? thanks
thanks

Answer
It's a netbook and it wasn't design to run games. Maybe causal games like card or puzzle games. Not sure about your laptop specs, but read the system requirement for each game before you buy. Don't even bother with 3D or graphically intense games. You can't run them.

In addition to AVG, Avast, Mircrosoft and Comodo also off free antivirus software. Comodo also offers a free firewall + Antivirus package. I use Comodo pack as well Windows Defender along with a malaware scanner called Malwaresbytes as layered defense. I also use Firefox over Internet Explorer with their addition security extensions that keeps my computer safe when I browse the web.

Another nice program is called CCleaner which cleans up your hard drive by deleting accumulated files you no longer need to keep it up and running.

All of them are free btw.

Yes, it's wise to purchase a flash drive or memory card because a netbook doesn't come with a disc drive to store or upload data.

Good luck with your new netbook and have fun!

I want to get more into digital art, need tips?

Daniella

Okay so I've decided that I want to get more serious about digital art than the cool yet limited app I have on my Nintendo 3DS... where's the best place to start?

Does everyone use photoshop, or are there special programs made just for artwork? I'm assuming there are, and if so which one would you recommend? I'm willing to purchase it if it's really good.

What would be the best drawing tablet to purchase?

Any other useful tips for someone wanting to start getting more into digital art?

Thanks in advance :)
By digital art, since I know that covers a ride range of things, I do not mean editing others photos or my own. I want to create things from scratch. I have a full sketchbook of things like portraits and landscapes, so I would like to continue that only... digitally. :)

Answer
Here are some things that might help you get started with illustration and design:

Free:
- Gimp (download, similar to Photoshop)
- Inkscape (download, similar to Illustrator)
- Lunapic (online, similar to Photoshop)
- Pixlr (online, similar to Photoshop)
- Blender (download, similar to Maya, a 3d design program)
- Autodesk Sketchbook Express (download, similar to Corel painter)
------> Autodesk software is available for free for students at:
------> http://students.autodesk.com/?nd=download_center

Paid:
- Photoshop (Photoshop elements is a cheaper alternative, it comes free with some tablets)
- Illustrator
- Corel Painter (you can get a free version of painter with certain tablets)
- Sketchbook Pro 6 (similar to Corel Painter)

Best drawing tablet: wacom intuos4 small (for beginners, try ebay for the cheapest). I've used wacom bamboo fun before as a starter tablet I was 100% disappointed and would not suggest if even as a starter tablet. There is a newer version of the intros, intuos5 but the new additions are really not worth the upgrade cost. There is a big difference between the 3 and 4 though so I'd go with the 4. The 3 is heavier, old, and clunky.

I use a tablet for everything and I noticed if you use it for long periods of time you might have wrist pain from your lower hand hitting a desk as you use it. What I use to save my hand is a thin glove without fingers. They are really cheap and normally around $2-3 for a pair. Sometimes I put tissues on the part of the glove that hits a desk for extra padding so I can use a tablet for many hours without having a bruised hand.

It sounds like you are interested in digital illustration. You might like Photoshop or Corel painter best. Illustrator is more technical and can be hard to be more free with. It is a great program but not the best for detailed illustration like landscapes. It is better for making things like logos, clip art. Both photoshop and Corel are pretty expensive for full versions but there is a big difference between the cheaper versions and the full versions.

Of all of the programs listed, Photoshop is probably your best bet, the full version, not elements. I wouldn't waste money on elements, I'd use it if you have a free copy from buying a tablet but it isn't worth buying in my opinion. Try out some of the free programs above if you can't get the paid version of photoshop. The downloadable ones are best for long projects because you could lose your work if you work online. I'd suggest Gimp and Adobe Sketchbook Express to start with. If you cannot get a student license for a free version of sketchbook, amazon sells it as Sketchbook Pro 6 for around $20-40 depending on who you buy it from. It is a larger version of the program with more options that is relatively cheap. A great option to Corel Painter if you don't want quite so many options (it sells for about $70 on amazon).

Other things that might help:
- a scanner
- a camera/phone for pictures of 2d art
- tripod for taking good pictures with camera
- Staedtler pigment liner markers (these are very expensive, roughly $10-15 for 4 but they are very good quality and should last awhile, great for inking drawings for good scans digitally)
- Prismacolor Turquoise soft pencils (for 2d work to scan, best pencils I've used so far, I've tried a lot of brands)
- Prismacolor Turqoise medium pencils
- Staedtler White eraser (I use these all of the time, and they are great! Best eraser I've used so far.)
- Staedtler white eraser pencil toppers (these are hard to find but also great)
- Zebra drift 0.5mm lead mechanical pencils (larger mechanical pencil)
- Pentel 0.7 mm lead mechanical pencil (regular mechanical pencil, my favorite kind)

Generally for 2d supplies, Staedtler, Prismacolor, Pentel, and Zebra are really good. My mechanical pencils are all japanese, they seem to be the best quality. I actually got them from a college book store that sell supplies for 5 for $1. Generally they are about $2-4 a piece though. Staedtler's stuff if German and known for high quality drafting supplies. Prismacolor is made in Mexico (at least the Turquoise pencils, they are very expensive but I've used the cheaper ones and they just aren't the same. Drawing smudge a lot with the cheap ones and aren't as dark. The cheap brands look 'fuzzy' a lot. The best place for most of these is either local 3rd party supply stores, not chains, or ebay. Amazon is pretty high with shipping.

Have fun! :D
