i understand there is software or something, but overall, i have no idea how to make manga. i am buying an how to draw manga and how to draw comic book soon, but im just curious,scan my images online, or use some high end 3d model software? please also list the cost of such software and or scanner if there is such things

Answer
Look up some guides on how to create a webcomic. They have assorted tips ranging from drawing to technologies and presentation.

The most basic challenges are to develop drawing skills and have many ideas for the comic. If you're a great artist but only one short story then you might have nowhere to take your characters. If you have many stories but can't present them then you have to seek a market for low-quality work.

For example, "Girl Genius" has good visual presentation and many stories within its great story arc. On the other hand, "Hidamari Sketch" is visually simple but covers many simple everyday stories, much as "Peanuts" did.

What is an optical scanner and how does it work?

huzaifai

Answer
in computing, a scanner is a device that analyzes an image (such as a photograph, printed text, or handwriting) or an object (such as an ornament) and converts it to a digital image. Most scanners today are variations of the desktop (or flatbed) scanner The flatbed scanner is the most common in offices. Hand-held scanners, where the device is moved by hand, were briefly popular but are now not used due to the difficulty of obtaining a high-quality image. Both these types of scanners use charge-coupled device (CCD) or Contact Image Sensor (CIS) as the image sensor, whereas older drum scanners use a photomultiplier tube as the image sensor.

Another category of scanner is a rotary scanner used for high-speed document scanning. This is another kind of drum scanner, but it uses a CCD array instead of a photomultiplier.

Other types of scanners are planetary scanners, which take photographs of books and documents, and 3D scanners, for producing three-dimensional models of objects.

Scanners typically read red-green-blue color (RGB) data from the array. This data is then processed with some proprietary algorithm to correct for different exposure conditions and sent to the computer, via the device's input/output interface (usually SCSI or USB, or LPT in machines pre-dating the USB standard). Color depth varies depending on the scanning array characteristics, but is usually at least 24 bits. High quality models have 48 bits or more color depth. The other qualifying parameter for a scanner is its resolution, measured in pixels per inch (ppi), sometimes more accurately referred to as samples per inch (spi). Instead of using the scanner's true optical resolution, the only meaningful parameter, manufacturers like to refer to the interpolated resolution, which is much higher thanks to software interpolation. As of 2004, a good flatbed scanner has an optical resolution of 1600â3200 ppi, high-end flatbed scanners can scan up to 5400 ppi, and a good drum scanner has an optical resolution of 8000â14,000 ppi.

Manufacturers often claim interpolated resolutions as high as 19,200 ppi; but such numbers carry little meaningful value, because the number of possible interpolated pixels is unlimited. The higher the resolution, the larger the file. In most cases, there is a trade-off between manageable file size and level of detail. Resolutions higher than 1200dpi are overkill for colour printers and monitors.

The third important parameter for a scanner is its density range. A high density range means that the scanner is able to reproduce shadow details and brightness details in one scan.

How do you know what short cuts to delete to help your PC to run faster?

I've heard that Windows XP takes up space with alot of useless files that you don't need once the program has been downloaded. Which are safe to delete? Thank you

Answer
These are the quickest ways to make your pc faster, if you need more help on how to do these, answers are a google away. I will just tell you what works.

A) Be sure you have at least 512 mb of ram. More may be overkill if you don't do a lot.

B) Use a good system cleaner like ccleaner, and make sure yoru startup entries are barebone, loading nothing except your antivirus, firewall, and messenger.

C) Use a good antivirus like AVG that doesn't hog system resources but has a nice and solid AV.

D) Use a spyware scanner like lavasoft adaware or spyboy search & destroy occasionally for scanning.

E) It really helps if your processor is at least 1.5 ghz or higher.

F) Get an ATI 2d/3d video accelerator. It can speed things up tremendously, especially working with video. More is better, but recommended you get no less than 32 mb for good performance.

G) In system properties, turn off everything under appearance except for using visual styles ( if you want things to be pretty), but if you just care about performance, uncheck that as well & use windows classic view.

H) Turn off windows updates, & if you have service pack 2, remove that as well, because MS never fix all the bugs, service pack 2 slows a pc to hell and breaks compatibility with many popular softwares.

I) Get a new harddisk, if your pc is older, the newer ones, (you want a 7,200 rpm or faster, as they can save and retrieve data over 2x faster than just a 5,400 one). I wouldn't select below about a 40 or 60 gig size, if you go too large, above 137, windows may or may not recognize it without somethig like maxtors free large drive fix.

J) If you dont use a background, it may make windows marginally faster, along with using black for your background.

K) If you have thousands of files, storing them in an external usb 2 drive will save you disk space and make windows substantially faster.

L) Turn off system restore, it slows things down. Some do not think it does, but system restore, in addition to doing it every 12 hours or so, depending on your settings, it does it for many popular apps when you install them such as media player 10. Over time, it can take many gigs of space and slow the pc down.

M) Use locate32 for finding files. It is free, finds files in a fraction of a second compared to over 15 min for windows when searching large drives, but may need you to undate its database before you start searching. Every time you mod or add lots of files, update it before searching, but it puts win search to shame, plus uses an easy interface similar to win 98.

N) Use startup manager from nirsoft. It is free, and not only checks for startup entries, but the entries show can all be deleted in mass, not just one at a time, plus it also shows all browser helpler objects. All browser helper objects may be deleted. Some debate about tea timer that comes with spybot search and destroy, or adobe but the truth is you can safely run your pc withotu any bho, as many do more harm than good anyway.

O) Google a free tool to stop prefetch. On xp, it needs to be cleaned out every so often. Some say it is harmless, but over time, when removing or testing large numbers of files, prefetch can get loaded with pointers to non existent files.

P) Remove things you dont need, such as windows messenger. Disable auto updater, turn off remote pc support, disable reboot on error, disable error reporting, turn off windows messenger spam service, disable grouping of taskbar items and hiding of system icons, turn off the rpc rebooting under all 3 of it's services.

Hope these helped. There may be others, but these should be more common ones that you can easily do with a bit of google.

Is there any other COOL editing software like iStopmotion i can use to make awesome videos?

What is it called and what does it do... thanks!!

Answer
Try these. All are FREE......

Pencil : http://www.pencil-animation.org/
Pencil is an animation/drawing software for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. It lets you create traditional hand-drawn animation (cartoon) using both bitmap and vector graphics. Pencil is free and open source.

Synfig Animation Studio : http://synfig.org/
Synfig is a powerful, industrial-strength vector-based open-source 2D animation software package, designed from the ground-up for producing feature-film quality animation with fewer people and resources.2D Animation has traditionally been very expensive because every frame must be drawn by hand. Even with today´s digital inking and painting software, the process still relies on individuals hand-drawing each frame. This laborious task is called "tweening".Synfig eliminates the task of manual tweening, producing smooth, fluid motion without the animator having to draw out each frame individually. This allows you to produce 2D animation with fewer people while producing art of a higher quality.

Tapptoons Linetester : http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/tapptoons/index.htm
The Tapptoons Linetester enables animators to use a scanner or video camera (with compatible capture card) to input animation images into a standard PC and edit their work, adding soundtrack and color if they wish and to output the result as a Windows AVI. Can be used for puppet animation as well as drawn animation.

eDrawings : http://www.edrawingsviewer.com/
eDrawings is a freeware utility which will give the user the power to view, create and share 3D models and 2D drawings. eDrawings offers unique capabilities like point-and-click animations that make it easy for anyone with a PC to interpret and understand 2D and 3D design data.

What can I use to cast a mold from stone without hurting the stone?

I'm new to this, but does anyone know what medium I would use to make a mold from a stone. In other words, There is an old building with a beautiful design sculpted in to it. I want to copy this design. I know there is a material out there that I can press against the original design and make a mold of it and then cast the design in plaster. I just don't know what material I would use to do this without hurting the stone.... Help!!!

Answer
I think the sculpey or any clay will work. If you use normal clay, any residue left will dissolve in the next rain, just don't use brown clay on light stone... if you use water based clay you would have to cast your plaster into the mold while the clay is still wet.
As the clay won't be very stable just on its own, you should consider making a mother mold on top of that. That is a hard shell, which just gives support to the soft part of your mold so it doesn't deform. It depends on the size of what you want to copy if you need it. You could make the mothermold from plaster bandages, but don't put plaster directly on the stone.
Before you start, consider carefully the shape of what you want to copy and where undercuts are and where you have to put in parting lines. What technique you use for mold making really depends on the exact shape of what you want to copy. If the structure is something complicated, you may want to practice how to make molds from more simple structures first so you are aware what causes problems and get some experience in how to solve them.

Another completely contact free method is if you happen to be at a university where they have a 3D laser scanning camera you can borrow, you could use the 3D laser scanner then make a model of your structure in the computer from the scans. That you could print out using a 3D printer. that way you can scale the model to any size (though anything large will be expensive to print)

Could you see this machine within the next 75 years?

Qelery

A "Home Diagnosis Machine" that looks like a mini MRI machine in your home that you will use daily. First the machine takes a drop of your blood and saliva as a sample. Then you lay on the machine as it brings into the tube, just like an MRI machine. It scans you body for about 5 minutes, taking 3D images of your body and examining the blood. It would be able to tell you everything from your blood pressure, to cancerous tumors, to what vitamins you lack. Your results will be dispalyed on a touch screen. Everything that needs your attention will be shown to you. It will diagnose you and display what medication, vitamins, or medical attention you need. You select the medication you need to buy and the machine will send it to your local pharmacy.

Answer
Sure, why not? Except that it will probably not look like a MRI machine at all and won't need 75 years to come to market. Like almost any product, this hypothetical device would have to be user friendly as well as have user appeal. That means no big, bulky machines in the house/apartment. I would envision it as more of a solid state scanner that could be placed on the wall, ceiling, shower, door frame or even in your bed frame (basically anything you walk past). Depending on how many points of origin the scanner(s) has (or perhaps it uses some kind of depth sensitive radiation) it can then scan you in three dimensions while you are stationary. There are already consumer available 3D scanners that place objects on turntables and produce a 3D image. So there's the technological component.
I can also see such a device coming to homes due to society's increasing paranoia and obsession with personal health and hygiene (I think this borders on mass psychosis). Basically anything that promises to be of some benefit to personal health will be easily accepted by consumers even if there are other potential drawbacks.
Factors against the invention of such a device would likely have to be economic or political in nature since social acceptance and technology are already in place. Also, a newer and better method might also be discovered in that time.

what are some reverse engineering techniques?

Kevin7

Answer
Reverse engineering of machines
As computer-aided design (CAD) has become more popular, reverse engineering has become a viable method to create a 3D virtual model of an existing physical part for use in 3D CAD, CAM, CAE or other software. The reverse-engineering process involves measuring an object and then reconstructing it as a 3D model. The physical object can be measured using 3D scanning technologies like CMMs, laser scanners, structured light digitizers or computed tomography. The measured data alone, usually represented as a point cloud, lacks topological information and is therefore often processed and modeled into a more usable format such as a triangular-faced mesh, a set of NURBS surfaces or a CAD model.
Reverse engineering is also used by businesses to bring existing physical geometry into digital product development environments, to make a digital 3D record of their own products or to assess competitors' products. It is used to analyse, for instance, how a product works, what it does, and what components it consists of, estimate costs, and identify potential patent infringement, etc. Value engineering is a related activity also used by businesses. It involves de-constructing and analysing products, but the objective is to find opportunities for cost cutting.

Reverse engineering of software
The three main groups of software reverse engineering are
1. Analysis through observation of information exchange, most prevalent in protocol reverse engineering, which involves using bus analyzers and packet sniffers, for example, for accessing a computer bus or computer network connection and revealing the traffic data thereon. Bus or network behaviour can then be analyzed to produce a stand-alone implementation that mimics that behaviour. This is especially useful for reverse engineering device drivers. Sometimes, reverse engineering on embedded systems is greatly assisted by tools deliberately introduced by the manufacturer, such as JTAG ports or other debugging means. In Microsoft Windows, low-level debuggers such as SoftICE are popular.
2. Disassembly using a disassembler, meaning the raw machine language of the program is read and understood in its own terms, only with the aid of machine-language mnemonics. This works on any computer program but can take quite some time, especially for someone not used to machine code. The Interactive Disassembler is a particularly popular tool.
3. Decompilation using a decompiler, a process that tries, with varying results, to recreate the source code in some high-level language for a program only available in machine code or bytecode.

Reverse engineering of integrated circuits/smart cards
Reverse engineering is an invasive and destructive form of analyzing a smart card. The attacker grinds away layer by layer of the smart card and takes pictures with an electron microscope. With this technique, it is possible to reveal the complete hardware and software part of the smart card. The major problem for the attacker is to bring everything into the right order to find out how everything works. Engineers try to hide keys and operations by mixing up memory positions, for example, busscrambling. In some cases, it is even possible to attach a probe to measure voltages while the smart card is still operational. Engineers employ sensors to detect and prevent this attack. This attack is not very common because it requires a large investment in effort and special equipment that is generally only available to large chip manufacturers. Furthermore, the payoff from this attack is low since other security techniques are often employed such as shadow accounts.

such as cameras, phones, computers, etc. What do you think the computer of the future will be like? What capabilities will it have that computers currently donât have? Do you see desktop computers becoming obsolete in
I mean becoming obsolete in the near future?

Answer
Well, D-Wave's quantum computer is worth watching.

Personally, I don't see desktop computers becoming obsolete especially soon.

I mean, I'm typing this on a mechanical keyboard and I'm looking at a display on my desk. That's the same as I used in about 1972, except back then it was a Tektronics storage display connected to a CDC mainframe. It's a setup I'm comfortable with. I've used smartphones, and I've used projection walls but for editing documents this is better. Of course, that's just the human interface - whether the computer is a mainframe, cloud, under the desk or built into the keyboard is of less concern.

I can see voice recognition finally making the leap to actually working for everyone, regardless of background noise and your accent.

For hardware, if 3D printers take off, I can see 3D laser or ultrasound scanners becoming more common, and some medical diagnostics becoming more mainstream (again, perhaps ultrasound or MRI based)

"9" movie button, green. "Ask Me About This 9.9.09" & an odd design...what is it?

maliaog

I saw the movie 9 and the theatre gave me a green button with "Ask Me About This 9.9.09" & an odd design on it... It doesn't appear to be a 3D thing, nor a "hidden picture"... and I couldn't see how it correlates to the movie... does anyone know what the heck this button is about?
I'm just wondering what this "design" has to do with anything... it never appeared in the movie (that I noticed anyway). It looks like a weird square barcode...

Answer
This type of barcode is an Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) which is a barcode for a website. When I went to the movie 9, I was able to pull out my smartphone (Android G1) and use the application, Barcode Scanner, to scan the barcode with the phone's camera, which then opened the phone's browser to a trailer video of the movie.

Help with VB6 to VB.NET conversion!?

RjSowden

I'm asking this because I don't know anything about VB6 (It was around before I was born), and theirs no point in me having to spend 6 weeks learning all the functions ect... when their are others with a much better understanding who will get it right first time.

I need to convert this code :

Private WindowWidth
Private WindowHeight
Private threshold
Private rgbvalue

Private Sub Form_Load()
'
WindowWidth = 320
WindowHeight = 240
myy = 1

End Sub

Private Sub Timer1_Timer()

Dim R As Long
Dim G As Long
Dim B As Long

Dim myx
Dim myy
Dim rgbvalue

threshold = Slider1.Value '1600000 '3876853 'Reverse BGR hex value for a red colour
Text1.Text = threshold
threshold = 1585276

myy = 1

mynumber = 1
mytextnumber$ = mynumber

Form1.Picture3 = LoadPicture("D:\Colin Ord\3d scanner\3D Scanner RT 2009\rgb.jpg")

On Error GoTo ErrorHandler

ErrorHandler:
If Err.Number = 53 Or 481 Then

Resume Next
End If

Picture1 = LoadPicture(mytextnumber$)

For xcnt = 0 To WindowWidth
If Picture1.Point(xcnt, 30) > threshold Then '100000 Then
origin = xcnt

GoTo start:
End If
Next

start:

For myy = 0 To WindowHeight

For myx = 0 To WindowWidth
If Picture1.Point(myx, myy) > threshold Then '1000000 Then
GoTo here:
End If
Next

here:

Picture1.PSet (myx, myy), RGB(255, 255, 0)
Picture1.Line (0, 30)-(WindowWidth, 30), RGB(0, 255, 0)

If Form1.Picture3.Point(myx, myy) > 100000 Then
rgbvalue = Form1.Picture3.Point(myx, myy)
End If

rotx = origin - myx
roty = myy * 2
rotz = (rotx + myx) / 2

'Output file

rotxx = rotz * Sin(rot) + myx * Cos(rot)
rotyy = roty 'myy '/ 2

'create the vertex string - 'X Y Z R G B'
Print #1, ((rotxx + rotx) & " " & (rotyy / 2) & " " & ((rotzz * -2) * 2) & " " & R & " " & G & " " & B)
Close #1

'LASER LINE PREVIEW BOX- Draws each vertex with a red dot.
Picture2.PSet (myx, myy), RGB(255, 0, 0)
Next

End Sub

...Into VB.NET So I can tweak it and put it into my own application. I got it from text right off the internet, so I cant try to import it into .NET and let that convert it for me, because I cant save it. Thanks to everyone who can give advice, and I'll definitely give out a best answer. Thanks so much again in advance!
I do know that the Timer class doe's need a handler. I know VB.NET well. Picture3 defines a picture box control

Answer
It looks like either your code is not complete or there is a reference library that you're going to need for this.

Form1.Picture3 = LoadPicture("D:\Colin Ord\3d scanner\3D Scanner RT 2009\rgb.jpg")

LoadPicture is not defined anywhere in the code you posted. There is also nothing listed here to make the Timer1_Timer sub run.

You're going to have to find the missing parts to this project if you want to use it as written. Otherwise you're going to have to disect it pulling out bits & pieces to make it work for you.

what are the best web design universities/colleges in USA? MAX!?

Michael

I would to become a web designer (graphic and coding) and what are the best universities/colleges for this in USA? with a BFA degree...

MAX!!?

Answer
In the USA, I recommend the following:

Pratt Institute, New York, NY;
Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI;
Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA;
California College of the Arts, San Francisco, CA;
University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), Los Angeles, CA;
Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI;
Otis College of Art and Design, Pasadena, CA;
Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA; and
Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA

Although I urge that you explore all of the above, I am more familiar with the following; and, thus, I have provided a bit of information.

*Art Center College of Design
1700 Lida Street
Pasadena, CA 91103
(626) 396-2373

The college offers programs leading to the BFA and BS Degrees, as well as graduate degrees. Its GRAPHIC DESIGN design program is first-rate and it includes excellent academic and technical offerings. For the increasingly computer-literate students who enter the Art Center, the idea of leadership is key. As the college notes, "these young designers will have opportunities to shape the development of a medium that is only beginning to fulfill its promise."

*Otis College of Art and Design
9045 Lincoln Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90045
(310) 665-6820

Otis College of Art and Design has a four year Bachelor of Fine Arts program that offers majors in seven areas: Communication Arts, DIGITAL MEDIA, Architecture/Landscape/Interiors, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Interactive Product Design and Toy Design. The cornerstone of the Otis program is the first year curriculum, which is called Foundation. Students from all majors take the core studio classes: drawing and composition, figure drawing, two and three dimensional design. In these integrated classes students build the art, design and creative skills and vocabulary that are the "foundation" of their subsequent studies and future work. Students enter their sophomore year well prepared to begin work in their major.

It has an excellent DIGITAL MEDIA program the primary goal of which is to strike a balance between traditional art and technology, and between individual vision and teamwork. By providing a fundamental understanding of digital tools and their creative applications, the department prepares graduates to meet the demands of a diverse and expanding job market. Leading designers for visual effects, Web, film, television, broadcast media, advertising, and video gaming guide the students.

*University of California Los Angeles (UCLA)
405 Hilgard Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90095
(310) 825-3101

The UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture has a world-class
Department of DESIGN AND MEDIA ARTS. The School and Department take pride in educating responsible designers and artists for the information age by teaching the fundamentals of Design, Media, and the Arts, and encouraging experimentation and innovation. The Department provides an extensive education in Design and Media Arts practice, history and criticism; and it fosters a critical and creative exploration of emerging forms of visual communication, typography, interaction and interface design, ubiquitous computing, virtual environments, information spaces, networked agents and other pertinent areas of research.

Housed in the remarkable Broad Art Center, its facilities include the DMA Labs. These facilities feature high-end Windows and Macintosh computers; various peripherals, such as scanners, laser printers, and large-format Epson plotters; CD and DVD burners; and film recorders and digital video cameras. The Labs also provide access to a large library of graphics software in the areas of digital photography, illustration, interactive media, and 3D-modeling and animation. In addition to the main labs, the facilities include studio space for graduates and undergraduates, several faculty research labs, a blue screen room, a video facility supporting analog and nonlinear digital editing, audio mixing, and video capture, and two digital audio facilities. Wireless access is available to laptop users, and all the computers in the facilities are connected to the campus network, giving students individual access to DMA network resources and the Internet.
