The physical object can be measured using 3D scanning technologies like CMMs, laser scanners, structured light digitizers or computed tomography. The measured data alone, usually represented as a point cloud, lacks topological information and is therefore often processed and modeled into a more usable format such as a triangular-faced mesh, a set of NURBS surfaces or a CAD model.
Reverse engineering is also used by businesses to bring existing physical geometry into digital product development environments, to make a digital 3D record of their own products or to assess competitors' products. It is used to analyse, for instance, how a product works, what it does, and what components it consists of, estimate costs, and identify potential patent infringement, etc. Value engineering is a related activity also used by businesses. It involves de-constructing and analysing products, but the objective is to find opportunities for cost cutting.

Reverse engineering of software
The three main groups of software reverse engineering are
1. Analysis through observation of information exchange, most prevalent in protocol reverse engineering, which involves using bus analyzers and packet sniffers, for example, for accessing a computer bus or computer network connection and revealing the traffic data thereon. Bus or network behaviour can then be analyzed to produce a stand-alone implementation that mimics that behaviour. This is especially useful for reverse engineering device drivers. Sometimes, reverse engineering on embedded systems is greatly assisted by tools deliberately introduced by the manufacturer, such as JTAG ports or other debugging means. In Microsoft Windows, low-level debuggers such as SoftICE are popular.
2. Disassembly using a disassembler, meaning the raw machine language of the program is read and understood in its own terms, only with the aid of machine-language mnemonics. This works on any computer program but can take quite some time, especially for someone not used to machine code. The Interactive Disassembler is a particularly popular tool.
3. Decompilation using a decompiler, a process that tries, with varying results, to recreate the source code in some high-level language for a program only available in machine code or bytecode.

Reverse engineering of integrated circuits/smart cards
Reverse engineering is an invasive and destructive form of analyzing a smart card. The attacker grinds away layer by layer of the smart card and takes pictures with an electron microscope. With this technique, it is possible to reveal the complete hardware and software part of the smart card. The major problem for the attacker is to bring everything into the right order to find out how everything works. Engineers try to hide keys and operations by mixing up memory positions, for example, busscrambling. In some cases, it is even possible to attach a probe to measure voltages while the smart card is still operational. Engineers employ sensors to detect and prevent this attack. This attack is not very common because it requires a large investment in effort and special equipment that is generally only available to large chip manufacturers. Furthermore, the payoff from this attack is low since other security techniques are often employed such as shadow accounts.

Photoshop or Ilustrator to tweak scanned drawings for use in After Effects?

I want to utilize the "2 1/2D" feature of AE (2D layers in a 3D environment) but rather than creating the images w adobe, I want to draw them myself and scan each one, then tweak individually before importing them to AE for use. Won't be working with photos, and am obviously an Adobe novice. Would I do better w PS or ILL? Thanks!

Photoshop is the best for what your needs are.

You just need to hook your printer/scanner up to the USB port of your computer and scan away.

Then all you have to do is open up Photoshop. Press File --> Open and find your scanned photo.
I can't give you a whole tutorial on how to tweak it up though so try to find some tutorials on YouTube, there's plenty out there.

Can you recommend a guide and software for making 3D objects?

My idea is to take photos of bones (scapula, femur...) from different angles, run them through a software which will somehow combine them and make a 3D object in space, that i can rotate and add annotation (tags?, description for different parts of bone)

I am not a programmer and i need something easy.

photos are 2d. you can get depth, but not 3d. you need a 3d scanner like a next engine 3d scanner they run $3000. the web site is pretty cool, it will show you how to scan and print. the printer in the web site is is a year old and now they have much better printers with more options on materials available.
for software you will need a program like Solidworks. it is #1 right now for 3d. it is what Pixiar animation use and many large companies. there are other programs, but after my research for myself most will not talk to the scanner. down side is cost and you need a pretty big system to run it.
then if you want you can send it to a 3d printer for a few dollars you will get a actual 3d sculpture. there are several 3d printers, but after looking at many the 'shapesways gallery' they can print in plastics, metal, ceramics.
this stuff is super cool. this should lead you in the right direction. these printers have only been available for public about a year, but they have been around since the 80s.

Is there technology to accurately measure a person`s size?

We can measure an asteroid way out in space. Surely we can measure a person right in front of us. I am thinking of a system which could for example tell me that in this moment I am 5.455 cubic feet, something like weighing myself but in feet instead of in pounds using s digital camera.

The Canon or the HP. Avoid Epson they are ink guzzlers that break easily and have poor life expectancy and print heads that block to the point they can't be cleaned. As the print heads cost more than the printer you will have to buy new ones over and over. Avoid unless rich or you can be without a printer every time it breaks!

im not trying to get into the whole mac vs pc debate BUT... i wanna know wat i need in order to get the job done and get it done right!! lol..... shud i save up the money for a mac ( though i do know that the mac book pro is cheaper now) but i could get a better pc for that price when it comes to memory and speed .... how much will i cost to get a PC and beef it up with graphic card and memory? or is it better just to settle for a mac?

Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Indesign are your core programs. I also bit the bullet and got Adobe Font Folio Adobe's entire font library. I cannot see going cheep with fonts. I use a PC at home and a PC at work. If money wasn't an issue I would choose Mac Hands down and definitely a Mac desktop over a laptop. You will need a computer with fast processors and fast ram and lots of it. Large hard drive allows you to work with bigger files with big scratch drive space for plenty of undos. You will also need a good monitor. Alot of the design programs have multiple tool tabs. It is nice to have a monitor that is big enough to display all of the tabs with out eating into your design area. A tablet isn't necessary.I rarely use mine. Also recommended getting a quality digital camera with a hot shoe adapter and filter capabilities. Stock photography has gotten better over the years but you can always tell when stock photography is used. A good scanner is always good. I would shy away from the absolute low end and pay a little extra to get a little bit better one. I have had good experience with Epson and hp scanners. I have fallen in love with my 27" Acer monitor. I often wonder how I designed on a smaller monitor. The 19" monitor at work works ok too. It is good to have a video card with DVI to support the larger LCD monitors. Though I don't think you need to go broke getting a fancy gaming video card unless you plan on working with video or 3d. If you plan on doing web design I believe a PC works best.

Most scanners today are variations of the desktop (or flatbed) scanner The flatbed scanner is the most common in offices. Other types of scanners are planetary scanners, which take photographs of books and documents, and 3D scanners, for producing three-dimensional models of objects.



Scanners typically read red-green-blue color (RGB) data from the array. This data is then processed with some proprietary algorithm to correct for different exposure conditions and sent to the computer, via the device's input/output interface (usually SCSI or USB, or LPT in machines pre-dating the USB standard). Color depth varies depending on the scanning array characteristics, but is usually at least 24 bits. High quality models have 48 bits or more color depth. The other qualifying parameter for a scanner is its resolution, measured in pixels per inch (ppi), sometimes more accurately referred to as samples per inch (spi). Instead of using the scanner's true optical resolution, the only meaningful parameter, manufacturers like to refer to the interpolated resolution, which is much higher thanks to software interpolation. As of 2004, a good flatbed scanner has an optical resolution of 1600â3200 ppi, high-end flatbed scanners can scan up to 5400 ppi, and a good drum scanner has an optical resolution of 8000â14,000 ppi.

Manufacturers often claim interpolated resolutions as high as 19,200 ppi; but such numbers carry little meaningful value, because the number of possible interpolated pixels is unlimited. The higher the resolution, the larger the file. In most cases, there is a trade-off between manageable file size and level of detail. Resolutions higher than 1200dpi are overkill for colour printers and monitors.

The third important parameter for a scanner is its density range. A high density range means that the scanner is able to reproduce shadow details and brightness details in one scan.

Hi there. First off to start i am useing a almost 3 year computer and am really, REALLY money-less (5,000 rent..) and i get only paid 7.5 dolalrs per hours and work only 6 hours..its hard now to make alot of money but my computer starts acting like a bad dog..It all of a sudden became DEAD SLOW. I boot and worry what will happen and stuff because i have no security program and decided to use something LESS LAG and NO AVAST OR AVG had enough of those on my laptop..anyways i hear something like norton or mcafee or even trend micro is good. I decided maybe ill use those and also use a software that might be makeing my computer into a junk. I dont mind spending 30 dollars - I MEAN IT 30 dollars. NO MORE. I also want to clear up that my computer takes 5 minutes to boot and longer to shutdown (around 7 minutes) so i am really mad from what i see.

There are many good FREE programs , Goto www.trendmicro.com on left side halfway down is free online services click on it then click on House call free scan then click on Launch house call free scan, then agree to terms and click launch house call. Under Using java based click starting house call (if you do not have java goto java.com and download it is free . must people have it java is used a lot for the internet for internet games chatting and 3d images.) you will get a security warning click run. Then click next scan complete computer . it will start preparing and then download updates and then scan your computer it can take 2 to 4 hours depending on hard drive size. When it is done it will list the results if you do not see them click the results tab near the top middle. Then it will say clean now at the bottom click the button and it will take a few minutes.
This should be done after any virus scan is run that finds a virus or trojan:
Goto your control panel then click on system icon then in top left click system restore then click on turn off system restore. Then reboot your computer as it comes back up keep clicking F8 key and go into Safe mode click yes to enter safe mode . goto all programs /accessories/system tools then disk clean up click ok once make to put check marks for download program files,temporary Internet Files , recycle bin and scroll down to temporary files, then click ok . click are you sure and yes. Once done reboot computer.

Photoshop or Ilustrator to tweak scanned drawings for use in After Effects?

I want to utilize the "2 1/2D" feature of AE (2D layers in a 3D environment) but rather than creating the images w adobe, I want to draw them myself and scan each one, then tweak individually before importing them to AE for use. Won't be working with photos, and am obviously an Adobe novice. Would I do better w PS or ILL? Thanks!

Photoshop is the best for what your needs are.

You just need to hook your printer/scanner up to the USB port of your computer and scan away.

Then all you have to do is open up Photoshop. Press File --> Open and find your scanned photo.
I can't give you a whole tutorial on how to tweak it up though so try to find some tutorials on YouTube, there's plenty out there.

How do I convert a 2d image into a 3d image that i can paint digitally?

I paint miniature models for a board game called Warhammer 40k, and I want to know if there is a program (or programs) that can allow me to upload a picture of the model, and paint it (even in a different program) so that I can try out new paint schemes without having to actually buy the paints first and put them on the model. Well, this is a bit of a complicated task. Unless you have the money to be spending on a three-dimensional scanner, you're pretty much sunk.

If you simply want to test out colors, your best bet may be to take photos of your unpainted model (or have it painted white, if you want better results later), convert the photo to grayscale and open it in Photoshop.

Create a new layer, set it to multiply, and use the brush tool to color on top of the black and white photo of the model. This should give you a good enough indication of what the end result will look like.
