do they make a 3d body scanner and lathe?

locostan20

i own a wood carving business and i have had several people come and ask me if i could make a 2d/3d wood carving of child, dog etc.... so i was wanting to know if there was a computer controlled 3d body scanner and carver/lathe/miller/router????

Answer
I also own a wood carving business, I custom carve Gunstocks. Here is my link http://nwccdan.webs.com/ I just saw on youtube the other day a duplicator that does what you want to do. Go to YouTube and type in wood duplicator or gunstock duplicator. I do all my work by hand with no lasers or duplicators as you can see on my site. What is your site, I'd like to see it. Help with building RGB LASER Scanner?

Matt

Hi there previously I have build some laser spyro projects but I have absolutely no idea about RGB LASER Scanners can someone please help.I have tried to find every possible information on the internet but I guess I need to start from the basics.
Thanks : )

Answer
there are several ways to do this, each involving different amounts of electro-optics in digital and analog forms.

you'll have to decide what you're scanning. is it 2D? 3D? still? or live-action?

in the easiest of cases, you can probably find an old photocopy machine and see how that works.

in the hardest case, your scanning data might become real-time input to a vehicle that must navigate through its environment.

so you will have a scanning beam, and a detector.

the scanning beam is a laser; you're interested in tri-colour, so this is either three lasers of different wavelengths, or it is a white-light laser that you will later filter. true white-light lasers are pulsed. if the pulse rate is really high (eg: in the millions of pulses/second), then each pulse could represent a pixel, and still have a mean free path of several meters.

the detector is a CCD photoreceptor, (or a whole lot of them), filtered to pass the desired wavelength(s). you can choose to capture:
a) a stream of individual bounces without regard to the focus;
b) a whole scan line into a buffer at once; or
c) a whole 2D frame into a buffer at once.
each method implies different mechano-optics, with a) being the simplest, mechanically. additionally, it may be possible to convert some digital cameras to use for this purpose.

to scan, you'll draw a point of light across a remote object, detecting the intensity of what bounces back. if this is not a range-finding device, then the outbound signal may be constant-intensity; but to detect distance, velocity, or absorption spectra, you will have to do some optical and/or high-speed tricks (sub-nanosecond processing is hard) involving correlating the outbound signal to the returned signal, to build a profile.

photon time-of-flight would indicate distance, (1 ns is about 30cm), and doppler shift would indicate speed.

to detect time of flight implies very high sensitivity and probably high frame rate, too.

to detect doppler shift and spectral lines would require that the returned beam travel through a prism, to give angular separation to the photon stream by wavelength. in this case, you'll always be scanning into a buffer, whose width covers the returned wavelengths.

each scan line would be drawn using a mirror that can tilt and swivel on two orthogonal axes. (or a pair of mirrors, arranged to swivel on orthogonal axes). controlling the mirror(s) will be subtle and delicate, because vibration may cause some fuzz in where the point gets drawn.
(think of a mechanism very similar to a DVD reader, for instance.)

for noise control, you'll want to distinguish between ambient light and returned signal.

How do this/what program to use?

Emily

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20PQBtyfNZY
What editing program is needed to do this?
i'm doing an ITS assignment and this would definitely get me the grade im looking for.
10 points if anyone gets me the program or similar editing system.

Answer
My first guess is Adobe Flash.
And from what it looks like, part of them are definitely hand-drawn on paper, scanned, background cut, and then inserted & animated on video editing programs/vfx programs like premiere pro/after effects or sony vegas pro.
I reckon you could do this on pinnacle studio too.
But seeing how old this video was, the actual program that was used to make this video probably doesn't exist on the market.

So there you go, those are the tools. BUT, you really need to understand that this.. this would take months for an individual (you or me) to do. Animation takes ages. Art direction takes ages. Laying out scanned/computer-drawn pictures according to the parallax (basically so that it looks 3D, far things look smaller, etc) would take about a good couple of hours on an editing program.

AND, the worst part of all, all those softwares that would be the only viable options to doing this besides drawing all this stop-motion (which I admit would be cheaper and faster than doing it with softwares) which is gonna hurt your hand, patience and time a lot.

I don't know how professional you are (maybe you are a talented artist who could smoke through all this under an hour) but.. a TEAM of professionals worked on this video and I doubt you are going to do this.

Software (if you care): Premiere Pro/After Effects, Flash Professional, sony vegas pro/pinnacle studio

Edit: after watching the video again, I realized humans and humans only were filmed then cartoonified. Any video effects program and maybe even some video programs with the right plugin should be able to do that. .

COMPUTER HELP: URGENT HARD DRIVE SPACE?

Mephisto

My hard drive is roughly 458 gb.

Recently, it hovered in the 407gb zone as I uninstalled and removed programs, this was what it was at for most of the time I owned the computer. 407 gb was acceptable.

I recently began a vfx project and installed Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and some other post-production softwares.

Ever since then, my hard drive space has dropped to 340 gb. What could be causing the 60 percent drop?

Whenever I boot one of the programs, have a session, and then close it, my hard drive drops my 1 or 2 gigabytes.

I scanned with McAffee, no virus exists.

* I remember reading somewhere that when a computer exceeds its RAM, it takes additional memory from the hard drive. My Acer Aspire has 4 gigs of ram, could it be that intense 3d rendering exceeded this quota and began to take stuff out of the HDD space?

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
you should clean the free space on your hard disk with CCleaner, because when you delete data its never really gone it just gives a command to the hard disk that it gives the right to overwrite old data when you add new data!

what do you need to do to produce a scale drawing of a watch part.?

Quintarius

Answer
dynamics in rendering as actual part or components of watch mechanism as drafted, or virtual rendering as digital cad drawing to technical scale,

would you be designing watch gear, or redrawing to replace or make paper or digital copy,

the small finite detailing on paper could be drawn out, and machined with precision tools,

a piece to be replaced could now be scanned in 3d, and 3d Printed as solid object to make mold replica,

as digital you could use 3D or vector tools as cad ware to design or redesign piece work,

what are some reverse engineering techniques?

Kevin7

Answer
Reverse engineering of machines
As computer-aided design (CAD) has become more popular, reverse engineering has become a viable method to create a 3D virtual model of an existing physical part for use in 3D CAD, CAM, CAE or other software. The reverse-engineering process involves measuring an object and then reconstructing it as a 3D model. The physical object can be measured using 3D scanning technologies like CMMs, laser scanners, structured light digitizers or computed tomography. The measured data alone, usually represented as a point cloud, lacks topological information and is therefore often processed and modeled into a more usable format such as a triangular-faced mesh, a set of NURBS surfaces or a CAD model.
Reverse engineering is also used by businesses to bring existing physical geometry into digital product development environments, to make a digital 3D record of their own products or to assess competitors' products. It is used to analyse, for instance, how a product works, what it does, and what components it consists of, estimate costs, and identify potential patent infringement, etc. Value engineering is a related activity also used by businesses. It involves de-constructing and analysing products, but the objective is to find opportunities for cost cutting.

Reverse engineering of software
The three main groups of software reverse engineering are
1. Analysis through observation of information exchange, most prevalent in protocol reverse engineering, which involves using bus analyzers and packet sniffers, for example, for accessing a computer bus or computer network connection and revealing the traffic data thereon. Bus or network behaviour can then be analyzed to produce a stand-alone implementation that mimics that behaviour. This is especially useful for reverse engineering device drivers. Sometimes, reverse engineering on embedded systems is greatly assisted by tools deliberately introduced by the manufacturer, such as JTAG ports or other debugging means. In Microsoft Windows, low-level debuggers such as SoftICE are popular.
2. Disassembly using a disassembler, meaning the raw machine language of the program is read and understood in its own terms, only with the aid of machine-language mnemonics. This works on any computer program but can take quite some time, especially for someone not used to machine code. The Interactive Disassembler is a particularly popular tool.
3. Decompilation using a decompiler, a process that tries, with varying results, to recreate the source code in some high-level language for a program only available in machine code or bytecode.

Reverse engineering of integrated circuits/smart cards
Reverse engineering is an invasive and destructive form of analyzing a smart card. The attacker grinds away layer by layer of the smart card and takes pictures with an electron microscope. With this technique, it is possible to reveal the complete hardware and software part of the smart card. The major problem for the attacker is to bring everything into the right order to find out how everything works. Engineers try to hide keys and operations by mixing up memory positions, for example, busscrambling. In some cases, it is even possible to attach a probe to measure voltages while the smart card is still operational. Engineers employ sensors to detect and prevent this attack. This attack is not very common because it requires a large investment in effort and special equipment that is generally only available to large chip manufacturers. Furthermore, the payoff from this attack is low since other security techniques are often employed such as shadow accounts.

I AM VIETN

Between normal X-ray technology and Computed Tomography used in hospital , especially about Computer Function of CT
thanks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Small suggestion :)
Are you having blog , could you invite me as your friend :)

Answer
Standard x-rays are simple images similar to photographs taken in the X-ray spectrum of light.

Computed tomography (CT), originally known as computed axial tomography (CAT or CT scan) and body section roentgenography, is a medical imaging method employing tomography where digital geometry processing is used to generate a three-dimensional image of the internals of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation. The word "tomography" is derived from the Greek tomos (slice) and graphia (to write). CT produces a volume of data which can be manipulated, through a process known as windowing, in order to demonstrate various structures based on their ability to block the X-ray beam. Although historically the images generated were in the axial or transverse plane (orthogonal to the long axis of the body), modern scanners allow this volume of data to be reformatted in various planes or even as volumetric (3D) representations of structures.

Although most common in healthcare, CT is also used in other fields, for example nondestructive materials testing.

Advantages Over Projection Radiography

First, CT completely eliminates the superimposition of images of structures outside the area of interest. Second, because of the inherent high-contrast resolution of CT, differences between tissues that differ in physical density by less than 1% can be distinguished. Third, data from a single CT imaging procedure consisting of either multiple contiguous or one helical scan can be viewed as images in the axial, coronal, or sagittal planes, depending on the diagnostic task. This is referred to as multiplanar reformatted imaging.

Regarding your question about the computing portion, X-ray slice data is generated using an X-ray source that rotates around the object; X-ray sensors are positioned on the opposite side of the circle from the X-ray source. Many data scans are progressively taken as the object is gradually passed through the gantry. They are combined together by the mathematical procedure known as tomographic reconstruction.

Newer machines with faster computer systems and newer software strategies can process not only individual cross sections but continuously changing cross sections as the gantry, with the object to be imaged, is slowly and smoothly slid through the X-ray circle. These are called helical or spiral CT machines. Their computer systems integrate the data of the moving individual slices to generate three dimensional volumetric information (3D-CT scan), in turn viewable from multiple different perspectives on attached CT workstation monitors.

In conventional CT machines, an X-ray tube and detector are physically rotated behind a circular shroud (see the image above right); in the electron beam tomography (EBT) the tube is far larger and higher power to support the high temporal resolution. The electron beam is deflected in a hollow funnel shaped vacuum chamber. X-rays are generated when the beam hits the stationary target. The detector is also stationary.

The data stream representing the varying radiographic intensity sensed reaching the detectors on the opposite side of the circle during each sweep is then computer processed to calculate cross-sectional estimations of the radiographic density, expressed in Hounsfield units. Sweeps cover 360 or just over 180 degrees in conventional machines, 220 degrees in EBT.

CT is used in medicine as a diagnostic tool and as a guide for interventional procedures. Sometimes contrast materials such as intravenous iodinated contrast are used. This is useful to highlight structures such as blood vessels that otherwise would be difficult to delineate from their surroundings. Using contrast material can also help to obtain functional information about tissues.

Pixels in an image obtained by CT scanning are displayed in terms of relative radiodensity. The pixel itself is displayed according to the mean attenuation of the tissue(s) that it corresponds to on a scale from -1024 to +3071 on the Hounsfield scale. Pixel is a two dimensional unit based on the matrix size and the field of view. When the CT slice thickness is also factored in, the unit is known as a Voxel, which is a three dimensional unit. The phenomenon that one part of the detector cannot differ between different tissues is called the Partial Volume Effect. That means that a big amount of cartilage and a thin layer of compact bone can cause the same attenuation in a voxel as hyperdense cartilage alone. Water has an attenuation of 0 Hounsfield units (HU) while air is -1000 HU, cancellous bone is typically +400 HU, cranial bone can reach 2000 HU or more (os temporale) and can cause artefacts. The attenuation of metallic implants depends on atomic number of the element used: Titanium usually has an amount of +1000 HU, iron steel can completely extinguish the X-ray and is therefore responsible for well-known line-artifacts in computed tomogrammes.

What's the difference between a 3D ultrasound and a 4D ultrasound?

David's mo

Thank you!

Answer
3D and 4D (moving 3D pictures) scanning gives amazing three dimensional picture of your baby on the screen. Your baby can be seen moving, yawning, sucking its thumb and even apparently smiling.

The equipment uses sophisticated techniques, transforming the traditional 2D scan such as the one that you have at the hospital into a 3D and 4D images.

The scan uses the same ultrasound output levels as the hospital based 2D scanners and as the machine actually generates the image, the exposure time is minimised. The safety of ultrasound is constantly evaluated and the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS) has produced documents to ensure its safe use.

With this in mind, your scan will only be performed by someone who holds a recognised medical or ultrasound qualification and who is registered with the appropriate professional bodies.

Hope this helps!! :)

Can you recommend a guide and software for making 3D objects?

Tomas

My idea is to take photos of bones (scapula, femur...) from different angles, run them through a software which will somehow combine them and make a 3D object in space, that i can rotate and add annotation (tags?, description for different parts of bone)

I am not a programmer and i need something easy.

Do you have any ideas? :)

Answer
photos are 2d. you can get depth, but not 3d. you need a 3d scanner like a next engine 3d scanner they run $3000. the web site is pretty cool, it will show you how to scan and print. the printer in the web site is is a year old and now they have much better printers with more options on materials available.
for software you will need a program like Solidworks. it is #1 right now for 3d. it is what Pixiar animation use and many large companies. there are other programs, but after my research for myself most will not talk to the scanner. down side is cost and you need a pretty big system to run it.
then if you want you can send it to a 3d printer for a few dollars you will get a actual 3d sculpture. there are several 3d printers, but after looking at many the 'shapesways gallery' they can print in plastics, metal, ceramics.
this stuff is super cool. this should lead you in the right direction. these printers have only been available for public about a year, but they have been around since the 80s.

How do u measure a fish's volume?

couturechi

besides using displacement?

Answer
thats probablly the only way possible....
unless you know the density of the fish: you could work it backward, yet it's highly unpractical due to the fact that different fish have different densities..

i mean, you could scan it using a 3D laser scanner and plot it in a CAD program..... but thats a waste of time.

What settings should I scan ultrasound pictures at?

Fadu

I am trying to scan 3D ultrasound pictures. I am not sure what settings to do them at. I have an HP scanner and the settings I can input are resolution (74-4800) and output type (millions of colors, 256, bw). When I do 300 dpi, the pictures are not very clear. I don't need the file size to be big, as the pictures themselves are normal sized ultrasound pictures. I think the reason the pics are not clear is that when I scan them, the size of pic is bigger than the actual pic, therefore it is blurry and grainy.

I would really appreciate any help or insight! Thanks!!

Answer
I don't know if your scanner has this function, but mine allows me to preview then crop the surrounding background out. Leaving only the photo area to be scanned.
Have a look and see if yours does the same.

What software (s) are the best for beginner cad/cam hobbyist? ? ?
