what is photoshop?

*~KoolChic

i want to know what it is and i actually wi cant to try it if i can find out how it works

Answer
here you go!!!

Adobe Photoshop, or simply Photoshop, is a graphics editor developed and published by Adobe Systems. It is the current market leader for commercial bitmap and image manipulation, and is the flagship product of Adobe Systems. It has been described as "an industry standard for graphics professionals."[1] Although originally designed to edit images for paper-based printing, Photoshop can also be used for a wide range of other professional and amateur purposes.

The current (10th) iteration of the program was released on April 16, 2007 and is marketed as "Photoshop CS3." "CS" reflects its integration with other Creative Suite products, and the number "3" represents it as the third version released since Adobe re-branded their products under the CS umbrella. Photoshop CS3 features additions such as the ability to apply non-destructive filters, and new selection tools named Quick Selection and Refine Edge that make selection more streamlined. On April 30th, Adobe released Photoshop CS3 Extended, which includes all the same features of Adobe Photoshop CS3 plus capabilities for scientific imaging, 3D, plus high end film and video users

Development

Early history
In 1987, Thomas Knoll, then a PhD student at the University of Michigan, began writing a program on his Macintosh Plus to display grayscale images on a monochrome display. This program, called Display, caught the attention of his brother John Knoll, an Industrial Light & Magic employee, who recommended Thomas turn it into a full-fledged image editing program. Thomas took a six month break from his studies in 1988 to collaborate with his brother on the program, which had been renamed ImagePro.[2] In 1988, Thomas renamed his program Photoshop and worked out a short-term deal with scanner manufacturer Barneyscan to distribute copies of the program (under the name Barneyscan XP) with their scanners.[3]

During this time, John traveled to Silicon Valley and gave a demonstration of the program to engineers at Apple Computer Inc. and Russell Brown, art director at Adobe. Both showings were successful, and Adobe decided to purchase the license to distribute in September 1988.[2] While John worked on plug-ins in California, Thomas remained in Ann Arbor writing out program code. Photoshop 1.0 was released in 1990 for Macintosh exclusively, and fit on one 1.44 MB floppy disk.[4]

Adobe releases
Further information: Adobe Photoshop release history

Photoshop CS in WindowsContinual revisions were made to the program and new versions were released in the following years. Version 2.0 became compatible with Windows in November 1992, and one year later it was ported to the SGI IRIX and Sun Solaris platforms. In September 1994, version 3.0 was released, which introduced layers and tabbed palettes. This version's logo also introduced the 'eye' motif seen until version 8.0 of the program.[5] In February 2003, the program shipped with the Camera RAW 1.x plug-in, which allowed the user to import RAW formats from different digital cameras directly into Photoshop.[6]

In October 2003, the program was renamed Adobe Photoshop CS. The name uses the abbreviation CS for products in Adobe Creative Suite. The logo focused around a feather, which was also used in 9.0.[5] The 10th version, Photoshop CS3 was released on April 16, 2007, with an icon modeled after periodic table elements, matching the new icons of other Creative Suite products.

Features

CS3

Smart Layers, nondestructive filter applicationCS3 is marketed with three main components of improvement over previous versions: "Work more productively, Edit with unrivaled power, and Composite with breakthrough tools."[7] New features propagating productivity include streamlined interface, improved Camera Raw, better control over print options, enhanced PDF support, and better management with Adobe Bridge. Editing tools new to CS3 are the Clone Source palette and nondestructive Smart Filters, and other features such as the Channel Mixer and Vanishing Point are enhanced. Compositing is assisted with Photoshop's new Quick Selection and Refine Edge tools, and improved Photomerge technology.[7]

CS3 Extended contains all features of CS3 plus tools for editing and importing some 3D graphics file formats, enhancing video, and comprehensive image analysis tools, utilizing MATLAB integration and DICOM file support.[8]

The logo is composed of white letters 'Ps' on a gradient blue square.

General
Photoshop has strong ties with other Adobe software for media editing, animation and authoring. Files in Photoshop's native format, .PSD, can be exported to and from Adobe ImageReady, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects and Adobe Encore DVD to make professional standard DVDs, provide non-linear editing and special effects services such as backgrounds, textures and so on for television, film and the Web. For example, Photoshop CS broadly supports making menus and buttons for DVDs. For .PSD files exported as a menu or button, it only needs to have layers, nested in layer sets with a cuing format and Adobe Encore DVD reads them as buttons or menus.

Photoshop can utilize the color models RGB, lab, CMYK, grayscale, bitmap, and duotone. Photoshop has the ability to read and write Raster and Vector image formats such as: .EPS, .PNG, .GIF, .JPEG, Fireworks, etc. It also has several native file formats:

The .PSD (Photoshop Document) format stores an image with support for most imaging options available in Photoshop. These include layers with masks, color spaces, ICC profiles, transparency, text, alpha channels & spot colors, Clipping paths, and duotone settings. This is in contrast to many other file formats (e.g. .EPS or .GIF) that restrict content to provide streamlined, predicatable functionality. Photoshop's popularity means that the .PSD format is widely used, and it is supported to some extent by most competing software.
The .PSB (Photoshop Big) format is a newer version of .PSD designed for files over 2 gigabytes.
The .PDD (PhotoDeluxe Document) format is a version of .PSD that only supports the features found in the discontinued PhotoDeluxe software.
While Photoshop is the industry standard image editing program for professional raster graphics, its relatively high suggested retail price has led to a number of competing graphics tools being made available at lower prices for the amateur market. To compete in this market, and to counter unusually high rates of piracy of their high end products, Adobe introduced Photoshop Elements, a version of Photoshop with many professional features removed. This is aimed firmly at the general consumer market as it is less desirable for prepress work.

Trademark
Adobe discourages use of their trademarks as a verb, as in "that picture was photoshopped". As with all trademarks, their product names and elements are part of licensing and graphic identity programs, and any attempt to undermine their position is expressly prohibited.[9]

my Windows Experience Index Dropped?

Q. I have an Alienware m11x...I updated some drivers from the manufacturer's website and made sure they were the latest ones. My index score for Gaming Graphics (3D business and gaming graphics performance) just dropped from 6.5 to 4.4! What the hell happened??

Answer
drivers are communication packages that "speak" to the cpu and relevant hardware/software using it, in old drivers you are given specific settings for that one device, however new drivers dont have the same settings and run on new technology, you have downloaded the latest drivers, BUT now other drivers that matched your old drivers need to be updated so they can tie with each other again.

your old drivers had a better match with all your older drivers and settings, because you have updated them, the rest need updated aswel. new drivers dont like old drivers, especially in windows vista and windows 7. as these operating systems use a unique format to register drivers compared to xp.

download uniblue driver scanner (google it) and install and scan your system, takes 15 seconds, this will check ALL your drivers and download new drivers for you, but you choose what ones to install.

hope this helps.

Where can I buy a low cost 3d scanner?

Al

I need to scan in some parts to add to a CAD model. I'm really looking for something that's plug and play, where I drop the object into the scanner and it automatically puts it into a CAD packge. Any ideas?

Answer
What do you consider low cost? Good ones run around $10,000 (e.g., Roland) but you can find some for around $2,500 (e.g., Nextengine).

How to know If we have brain tomur?

Yuvraj Har

Answer
It is impossible to say without professional medical attention. As another poster has stated, some form of brain imaging will probably be necessary, and a tomographic scanner would likely be used.

You may have seen pictures of these. Generally using multiple x-rays from many angles and a powerful computer to create a 3D image (a "CT" or Computed Tomography picture), or a similar method but using nucleomagnetic resonance (an "MRI" or Magnetic Resonance Imaging picture), they are usually huge doughnut-shaped devices into which a sliding bed-type fixture slides.

Tumour or not, it sounds like you need to see a doctor. Book an appointment now.

What is the likeliness of getting a gau-19?

John

Like how much $$$ would one need to order the d*mn thing?
How hard it is to aquire one in the first place?
And what kind of federal license would you need to have to own it?
Lastly, what process would need to be carried out to aquire this license?

I'm guessing a kind of military license, $5,000, and a due process to order, ship, and receive as well as shipping payment. General Dynamics doesn't just hand out Gau-19s to just anyone, although that would be pretty convenient. And i'm guessing extensive training (military) and testing to aquire this particular license. I'm also guessing that from its little popularity and being widely unkown that it may be easier than i think, still difficult, but easier to aquire than that of an m134.

below, I get a little off here, so read if you please but you don't have to cause it's not part of my question, just some facts and links, i'd rather have my questions answered.

My reasons for wanting to aquire this weapon is for a last defense for when the tyranny of our government reaches to the point of an absolute dictatorship and we merge into the rest of the worlds
revolution in the act to rebuild nations, that this will help defend myself and my family, an ar-15 won't cut it. Also, because of its 3 barrels and ability to change the R.O.F. of the weapon, can help preserve ammo than its 6 barreled counterpart (m134), and speaking of ammo, it has a larger round than its counterpart making the gau-19 (50-BMG) better than the m134 (7.62 x 51). And although the .50 is more expensive than the other, because of the lower fire rate of the gau-19, in the long run, i save, cause its the m134's 5,000 rpm Vs. the gau-19's 1,000 rpm rate (or selectable 1,250 rpm, 1,300 rpm, and 2,000 rpm). So as you can see here, my reasons are very good reasons. My final reason is because, admit it, it's an awesome weapon, the machine in my favorite game series Halo for the XBox is modeled after the gau-19.

gau-19 is the 4th one down

Answer
It might be possible to purchase one from a foreign military entity. You can buy MIG-29 fighter jets from former soviet republic air forces. Some are for sale for around 5 million dollars. You might not be able to get a GAU-19 since they do not just sell them to anyone. If you are really that determined to get one you could use 3d scanners to help reverse engineer the GAU-19 in 50 caliber and produce one for yourself. If in the end with all of the legal paperwork ,and tax stamps you can have a fully automatic GAU-19. If you cannot get your hands on a GAU-19 you could make something similar that could do the same job ,but reverse engineering an GAU-19 is probably your best bet since you probably will not be able to get one imported or purchase one from general dynamics. Remember you will have to get the proper manufacturing licenses from the ATF.

Answer
that sounds exactly like my computer. your computer is still using onboard video memory. if you have the same motherboard as me then chances are you only have a PCI-E X1 connection for upgrading video. there is only one video card that fits ,the Radeon X1300, it has 128mb memory onboard and 512mb hypermemory. it's still a pretty good card.

Could anyone please help me? Thanks in advance. I really don't know what to do.

Answer
Your scan indicates you are using the generic VGA driver that is the most basic of use. Good news is your video card is working, bad news is that you don't have the correct driver for it. If you video card is a stand alone card, meaning it is a separate card installed in a slot on your system board, you can physically look at it and obtain the model and make of it. Then go to the manufacturer website and download a driver. If it is an onboard card, meaning it is part of the system board, you can go to the manufacturer of the board and get the video driver from them.

Droid bionic? :/ :) :?

Toni Scude

Hi there I was just woundering when the new droid bionic would be comming out? I heard this month but im not sure because I have hear different! I have been waiting to buy a droid and then I found out about the droid bionic and it sound really cool. People say droid phones suck but it's hard for me to bealive just because they keep making more of them and alot of the reviews say there great. Could Anyone with a droid tell me if there any good?

Answer
1. It will come out on the 8th of September. You can order online on the 7th but won't be delivered until after the 8th.

2. Droid vs. Blackberry / Droid vs. iPhone

Droid vs. Blackberry.
It really depends on what you are wanting the phone to do. If you want the best email functionality for business and government then BB is really your only choice. Blackberry is the only system approved to work with Common Access Cards (CAC). Hopefully that will change so that Android will be able to do the same. Maybe with near field technology. Blackberry fans also love RIMs IM services and outlook support (Contacts, calender, tasks. . . .). Android currently uses Gmail as its backbone for email, calendar, tasks, etc. . . But the real beauty is if you don't like GMail then you can use almost anyone you want. Android is more configurable that Blackberry. Droid has consistently had a better web browsing capability.

Droid Vs. iPhone
Many Android fans would say that the Iphone is the smart phone for dumb people. I disagree. The iPhone is a good phone for a person that doesn't care to customize their phone a great deal. Apple has strict control over apps and interfaces. The good news is that makes the aps and interfaces work fairly well. The bad news is that you will usually pay more and maybe kept from doing exactly what you want.
Android is open. The good news is that you can customize at will. the bad news is that you now will see several apps and interfaces that sometimes work great and other times not so great. It may take some trial and error to get what you really want. Often times aps are free or less expensive than iPhone.
iPhone has 1 choice for manufacture and form factor. Android has several manufactures and form factors. So if all your friends have iPhones then you may elect to get the iPhone just so you can use proprietary aps like face time with them.
Apple also likes to work their bugs out thoroughly before a release. Which in most cases (except the antenna on iPhone 4) makes a stable smart phone. The bad news is that it can stifle innovation. Android phones are on the leading edge of technology (3D, Near Field Technology, finger print scanners, web top docks, physical keyboard. . .
If you already have an iPad, MAC, or have everything on iTunes then the iPhone is the easiest solution. Android does have aps to do the same thing but it is not as good as the native interface. My BMW works great with iPhone but takes some work arounds to work with Android. Android has items like heart rate Monitors that only work with Android.
Android has Flash support so it has a better web browsing experience. The iPhone doesn't look like it is going to get flash support any time soon so web browsing may be less than ideal.
So which is the smart phone for you? If you work for a company/government and are Outlook dependent Blackberry is still probably the best choice (right now). If you want something super easy and already bought into Apple with outher devices then the iPhone may be your choice. If you like to customize your smart phone and like the choice of form factor and/or manufacture then an Android device is for you.

Below is a link of 5 reasons Android is better than iPhone. I could not find any recent video of why iPhone is better that Android.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=9Yv17sQnV6k

Hope that helps

Disclosure: I am currently using Android and will buy the Droid Bionic on the 8th.

How to integrate 3d scanner on a robot?

minamoto

Answer
You could use gamma rays which might pentetrate through an object and bounce back. Normal light cannot penetrate through opaque solids like metal, and thus high frequency waves would be preferable. Another way would be to implement several scanners that would fly around the object and gather data from thousands of angles. Miniature robotic cameras shaped like a cube could be attached to 5 high power propellors (1 per face of the cube, leaving 1 face open for the camera itself) to ensure full mobility for the cameras. They could then be programmed to fly around the object and could possibly use electron scanning technology to measure the countours of the object. The mini-robots would then fly back to the main robot and upload the data, which would be pieced together and could be visually displayed in a 3 dimensional graphing program. The miniature robots would have to account for wind resistance and external interference (for example, if someone blew on a mini-robot, it would have to propel towards the wind in order to retain its current position). It's very possible, but would be extremely expensive and would take a good research team many years before it could be completely perfected for commercial use (or private use, if you have millions of dollars to throw out).

What is the difference between a ultrasound and a 3D ultrasound?

chyna

Answer
A 3D (3-Dimensional) ultrasound artificially shows "depth" as opposed to a regular 2D ultrasound view. A 4D is even better on the latest scanners in that it shows the 3D view in real-time motion and is a lot more practical to use in most cases. Most 3D & 4D sonos are used in pregnancy to check for fetal defects (i.e. cleft palate in the face)

Think about how mobile our computing devices have become and the convergence of different devices?

Michael

such as cameras, phones, computers, etc. What do you think the computer of the future will be like? What capabilities will it have that computers currently donât have? Do you see desktop computers becoming obsolete in
I mean becoming obsolete in the near future?

Answer
Well, D-Wave's quantum computer is worth watching.

Personally, I don't see desktop computers becoming obsolete especially soon.

I mean, I'm typing this on a mechanical keyboard and I'm looking at a display on my desk. That's the same as I used in about 1972, except back then it was a Tektronics storage display connected to a CDC mainframe. It's a setup I'm comfortable with. I've used smartphones, and I've used projection walls but for editing documents this is better. Of course, that's just the human interface - whether the computer is a mainframe, cloud, under the desk or built into the keyboard is of less concern.

I can see voice recognition finally making the leap to actually working for everyone, regardless of background noise and your accent.

For hardware, if 3D printers take off, I can see 3D laser or ultrasound scanners becoming more common, and some medical diagnostics becoming more mainstream (again, perhaps ultrasound or MRI based)

no graphics card?

My mom installled this crappy virus scanner and its said it found over 300 viruses i thought it was a lure but if that has antyhing to do about it...but.....ever since i try t open a game up something needin a 3d graphics wich we have cause ive done it bfore we have nvidia graphics card with the computer type hp pavilion m400y but help i just want to know where i go to install the latest graphics card fr nvidia thanks :D

Answer
If you know what kind of graphics card you have, you could check out http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

If you don't you need to find that info. Get to the Device Manager by right-clicking your "My Computer" icon on your desktop or Start Menu (If you have XP). Then go to the Hardware tab. Under there, get to the Device Manager and check under Display Adapters. You should find you card info there. Hope this helps!

Vertex Shader Version 3.0 Needed--You have 2.0

Any suggestions on what i need to do to clear RAM and make my preformance better?

Answer
With a couple of minor upgrades you can play WoW.

Add more memory...you can go to crucial.com and use their system scanner to find out how many memory slots your system has and how much of what type and speed of memory it uses.
http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx

Add a graphics "card". Your systems' integrated graphics don't meet the requirement for WoW, but you can add an inexpensive Radeon HD 4650, HD 4670, HD 5550 or HD 5570 that will.

What are the best symbians/heavily modified symbians to date?

What are the best keitai/clamshell/flip symbian phones?

Answer
I've seen one... i think what you're asking for is Fujitsu and Sharp
Fujitsu F04D and 11C some has fingerprint scanner. Can record HD Video and some can record both HD and 3D.

Some clamshell/flip phone have unlocked simcard and some need hypersim.
Even though its unlocked you cant use 3G internet, TV, and GPS. Its not an smartphone so no need for that. Since you can use awayfind. search it in google for more info. Its really useful.

The only flip phone you need to hack is the android or hybrid one, also in japan. So that you'll be able to use 3G internet since its a smartphone. I found one from j-phone and its 758$ i think...

what is best apple mac or windows vista?

potter

hi, i am thinking about getting a new laptop and i am stuck between vista and mac i only have about 600-700 pounds to spend baring in mined that i will be using it for internet and gaming mostly. can anyone help me

Answer
First - you can't find an Apple really at that price. I mean, a low end MacBook - maybe?
Second - it depends.
You have to decide what YOU want best.
Leopard and Vista both have bugs that both companies need to work out - I have used both. Leopard caused me more problems at start - tried it when it came out. I chose to go with Vista when SP1 came out because that's usually when MS starts getting the really bad things done.
Anyhow... some Pros and Cons
Mac - If you aren't really computer-savvy Macs are great. Their interface is designed to be pretty simple and stuff. They have some neat little graphical features but so does Vista now. In terms of design - the differences aren't enough to scream about.
Some of the programs offered with Mac people swear by - iPhoto, and that kind of stuff. But Windows has an equivalent for everything.
Vista - It is still a great interface and now kind of similar to Mac (I won't lie they got some influence from Mac) and in my opinion is easier to control stuff. I like being able to scan my computer and defragment my hard drive to create more room. If you know what this is - you probably want Vista.
Don't be fooled by the "Windows gets viruses and Macs don't." While it is unlikely that a Mac will get a virus - they DO get them and it is happened more often. A friend of ours got a Trojan that prevented him from doing ANYTHING on the internet (auto sent him to a different site) and because he didn't have a virus scanner or anything like that he had to completely wipe the hard drive. I like that Windows has stuff available for me to prevent that - while Mac just says they don't get viruses and tries to avoid a problem that is biting at their tails.
The other things is A LOT of programs do not run on Macintosh - meaning games, 3D modeling stuff - and what not. What you should do is check the applications you want to run and make sure they are available on the operating system you want.
People are die hard Windows and die hard Mac fans - there is a lot of animosity between the two communities out there. Don't judge on people's angry views - I mean I can be a bit angry.
Mac and Vista both have their ups and downs. Mostly these factors should help you decide:
-What programs you want to run and if they are available on the OS you choose?
-What design you like better? If you are used to XP, Leopard will be a big jump for you.
-What does the computer you are looking at run? What computer is in your price range? A Mac might not be best because you can get faster/bigger HD in a laptop running Vista. This is really up to you.

Don't judge on the stupid Mac commericials or the pointless Microsoft commercials (I hate both of them.) Just go with what you like the best.

By the way - games on Mac don't come out very often. Usually a year or more after the PC version.
If you wanna play Warhammer Online like I did - get a Vista laptop.

resident evil code veronica x metal detectors?

linker21

i stuck on this part how can i pass it possibley give me a link

Answer
If you haven't, grab the fire extinguisher from the shutter room before you enter the building with the metal detectors. You have to put out that fire that explodes at the beginning by the cemetery. Inside the suitcase is an TG alloy material item that can't be detected by metal detectors. Go back in the building and past the 2nd metal detector. Grab the Hawk emblem from the security box and take it to the big machine by the table. It's the 3d scanner.

*set off the metal detectors to close the windows and shutters, or zombies will get in and you have no weapons.*

Place it in there and place the alloy in he machine next to it to make a duplicate. Take the duplicate and go handle your business!

How do game designers do 3D character modeling?

Sly Cooper

Is it just all writing code or is there some sort of 3D photoshop-like tool to do it?

Answer
They first discuss what the character should look like in a meeting with a 2d artist. The artist might make quick sketches to try to see if they are on the right track. From there the artist will make several variations to see which direction is most accurate . They may repeat this process a few times depending on how important the character is in the game. Towards the end of the process, they'll draw the same charter in different posses and situations to get a more polished idea.

When that's all settled they may either have a 3d model made of the character and then digitize it with a 3d scanner. If they're more low end, they most likely will just have the 3d artist recreate it using the drawings as reference.

The artist will use programs like 3D Studio Max, Maya or Lightwave. If they're very high end they may have their own proprietary software .

The next step is rigging the character. This is making a skeleton control system in the character. Think of it as virtual bones. They pull the hand and the arm bends to accommodate it. Like a puppet. Once that's all done they will make low polygon versions of the character so it can move quickly in a video game. The high polygon detailed model will be used for pre-rendered cut scene animations, opening sequences and commercials.

Why dont airports use dogs instead of those 3d body scanners?

BillsGold

Dogs could detect everything those scanners do and more. Why not make them standard at every airport gate? My own theory is that you cant make a lot of money from dogs so there's no lobbyists advocating for dogs. You can make money off of those scanners ($150,000 a machine?). Is our security being subverted by washington lobbyists?

Answer
If each team had several dogs all trained in detecting different substances, the handlers could simply walk the dogs along the line of waiting passengers and remove anyone the dogs "hit" on. Forget technology, let nature expose them. I agree. Dogs not scanners.

What can I use to cast a mold from stone without hurting the stone?

disciple

I'm new to this, but does anyone know what medium I would use to make a mold from a stone. In other words, There is an old building with a beautiful design sculpted in to it. I want to copy this design. I know there is a material out there that I can press against the original design and make a mold of it and then cast the design in plaster. I just don't know what material I would use to do this without hurting the stone.... Help!!!

Answer
I think the sculpey or any clay will work. If you use normal clay, any residue left will dissolve in the next rain, just don't use brown clay on light stone... if you use water based clay you would have to cast your plaster into the mold while the clay is still wet.
As the clay won't be very stable just on its own, you should consider making a mother mold on top of that. That is a hard shell, which just gives support to the soft part of your mold so it doesn't deform. It depends on the size of what you want to copy if you need it. You could make the mothermold from plaster bandages, but don't put plaster directly on the stone.
Before you start, consider carefully the shape of what you want to copy and where undercuts are and where you have to put in parting lines. What technique you use for mold making really depends on the exact shape of what you want to copy. If the structure is something complicated, you may want to practice how to make molds from more simple structures first so you are aware what causes problems and get some experience in how to solve them.

Another completely contact free method is if you happen to be at a university where they have a 3D laser scanning camera you can borrow, you could use the 3D laser scanner then make a model of your structure in the computer from the scans. That you could print out using a 3D printer. that way you can scale the model to any size (though anything large will be expensive to print)

tell me the difference :)?

Between normal X-ray technology and Computed Tomography used in hospital , especially about Computer Function of CT
thanks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Small suggestion :)
Are you having blog , could you invite me as your friend :)

Answer
Standard x-rays are simple images similar to photographs taken in the X-ray spectrum of light.

Computed tomography (CT), originally known as computed axial tomography (CAT or CT scan) and body section roentgenography, is a medical imaging method employing tomography where digital geometry processing is used to generate a three-dimensional image of the internals of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation. The word "tomography" is derived from the Greek tomos (slice) and graphia (to write). CT produces a volume of data which can be manipulated, through a process known as windowing, in order to demonstrate various structures based on their ability to block the X-ray beam. Although historically the images generated were in the axial or transverse plane (orthogonal to the long axis of the body), modern scanners allow this volume of data to be reformatted in various planes or even as volumetric (3D) representations of structures.

Although most common in healthcare, CT is also used in other fields, for example nondestructive materials testing.

Advantages Over Projection Radiography

First, CT completely eliminates the superimposition of images of structures outside the area of interest. Second, because of the inherent high-contrast resolution of CT, differences between tissues that differ in physical density by less than 1% can be distinguished. Third, data from a single CT imaging procedure consisting of either multiple contiguous or one helical scan can be viewed as images in the axial, coronal, or sagittal planes, depending on the diagnostic task. This is referred to as multiplanar reformatted imaging.

Regarding your question about the computing portion, X-ray slice data is generated using an X-ray source that rotates around the object; X-ray sensors are positioned on the opposite side of the circle from the X-ray source. Many data scans are progressively taken as the object is gradually passed through the gantry. They are combined together by the mathematical procedure known as tomographic reconstruction.

Newer machines with faster computer systems and newer software strategies can process not only individual cross sections but continuously changing cross sections as the gantry, with the object to be imaged, is slowly and smoothly slid through the X-ray circle. These are called helical or spiral CT machines. Their computer systems integrate the data of the moving individual slices to generate three dimensional volumetric information (3D-CT scan), in turn viewable from multiple different perspectives on attached CT workstation monitors.

In conventional CT machines, an X-ray tube and detector are physically rotated behind a circular shroud (see the image above right); in the electron beam tomography (EBT) the tube is far larger and higher power to support the high temporal resolution. The electron beam is deflected in a hollow funnel shaped vacuum chamber. X-rays are generated when the beam hits the stationary target. The detector is also stationary.

The data stream representing the varying radiographic intensity sensed reaching the detectors on the opposite side of the circle during each sweep is then computer processed to calculate cross-sectional estimations of the radiographic density, expressed in Hounsfield units. Sweeps cover 360 or just over 180 degrees in conventional machines, 220 degrees in EBT.

CT is used in medicine as a diagnostic tool and as a guide for interventional procedures. Sometimes contrast materials such as intravenous iodinated contrast are used. This is useful to highlight structures such as blood vessels that otherwise would be difficult to delineate from their surroundings. Using contrast material can also help to obtain functional information about tissues.

Pixels in an image obtained by CT scanning are displayed in terms of relative radiodensity. The pixel itself is displayed according to the mean attenuation of the tissue(s) that it corresponds to on a scale from -1024 to +3071 on the Hounsfield scale. Pixel is a two dimensional unit based on the matrix size and the field of view. When the CT slice thickness is also factored in, the unit is known as a Voxel, which is a three dimensional unit. The phenomenon that one part of the detector cannot differ between different tissues is called the Partial Volume Effect. That means that a big amount of cartilage and a thin layer of compact bone can cause the same attenuation in a voxel as hyperdense cartilage alone. Water has an attenuation of 0 Hounsfield units (HU) while air is -1000 HU, cancellous bone is typically +400 HU, cranial bone can reach 2000 HU or more (os temporale) and can cause artefacts. The attenuation of metallic implants depends on atomic number of the element used: Titanium usually has an amount of +1000 HU, iron steel can completely extinguish the X-ray and is therefore responsible for well-known line-artifacts in computed tomogrammes.

I have to do ppt on MRI scan. Please give info which is easy to understand.
What is MRI?How do MRI Scanners work and its principle.MRI uses and applications. What other slides can I incluse?

Answer
The principle behind the use of MRI machines is that they make use of the fact that body tissue contains lots of water (and hence protons) which gets aligned in a large magnetic field. Each water molecule has two hydrogen nuclei or protons. When a person is inside the powerful magnetic field of the scanner, the average magnetic moment of many protons becomes aligned with the direction of the field. A radio frequency current is briefly turned on, producing a varying electromagnetic field. This electromagnetic field has just the right frequency, known as the resonance frequency, to be absorbed and flip the spin of the protons in the magnetic field. After the electromagnetic field is turned off, the spins of the protons return to thermodynamic equilibrium and the bulk magnetization becomes re-aligned with the static magnetic field. During this relaxation, a radio frequency signal (electromagnetic radiation in the RF range) is generated, which can be measured with receiver coils.

Information about the origin of the signal in 3D space can be learned by applying additional magnetic fields during the scan. This is the idea of K-space, 3d image compiled from multiple 2d images. This 3d image can also produce images in any plane of view. The image can be rotated and manipulated by the doctor to be better able to detect tiny changes of structures within the body. These fields, generated by passing electric currents through gradient coils, make the magnetic field strength vary depending on the position within the magnet. Because this makes the frequency of the released radio signal also dependent on its origin in a predictable manner, the distribution of protons in the body can be mathematically recovered from the signal, typically by the use of the inverse Fourier transform.

Protons in different tissues return to their equilibrium state at different relaxation rates. Different tissue variables, including spin density, T1 and T2 relaxation times, and flow and spectral shifts can be used to construct images. By changing the settings on the scanner, this effect is used to create contrast between different types of body tissue or between other properties, as in fMRI and diffusion MRI.

MRI contrast agents may be injected intravenously to enhance the appearance of blood vessels, tumors or inflammation. Contrast agents may also be directly injected into a joint in the case of arthrograms, MRI images of joints. Unlike CT, MRI uses no ionizing radiation and is generally a very safe procedure. Nonetheless the strong magnetic fields and radio pulses can affect metal implants, including cochlear implants and cardiac pacemakers. In the case of cochlear implants, the US FDA has approved some implants for MRI compatibility. In the case of cardiac pacemakers, the results can sometimes be lethal, so patients with such implants are generally not eligible for MRI.

Since the gradient coils are within the bore of the scanner, there are large forces between them and the main field coils, producing most of the noise that is heard during operation. Without efforts to damp this noise, it can approach 130 decibels (dB) with strong fields.

MRI is used to image every part of the body, and is particularly useful for tissues with many hydrogen nuclei and little density contrast, such as the brain, muscle, connective tissue and most tumors.

MRI scans require a magnetic field with two properties, uniform field density and strength. The magnetic field cannot vary more than 1/10,000 of 1% and field strength ranges(depending on the scanner) from 0.2 to 3 tesla in strength in currently clinically used scanners, with research scanners investigating higher field strengths such as 7 tesla. The lower field strengths can be achieved with permanent magnets, which are often used in "open" MRI scanners, for claustrophpobic patients. Higher field strengths can be achieved only with superconducting magnets.
