Answer
MRI machines make use of the fact that body tissue contains lots of water, and hence protons (1H nuclei), which get aligned in a large magnetic field.[4] Each water molecule has two hydrogen nuclei or protons. When a person is inside the powerful magnetic field of the scanner, the average magnetic moment of many protons becomes aligned with the direction of the field. A radio frequency current is briefly turned on, producing a varying electromagnetic field. This electromagnetic field has just the right frequency, known as the resonance frequency, to be absorbed and flip the spin of the protons in the magnetic field. After the electromagnetic field is turned off, the spins of the protons return to thermodynamic equilibrium and the bulk magnetization becomes re-aligned with the static magnetic field. During this relaxation, a radio frequency signal (electromagnetic radiation in the RF range) is generated, which can be measured with receiver coils.

Information about the origin of the signal in 3D space can be learned by applying additional magnetic fields during the scan. This is the idea of K-space, 3d image compiled from multiple 2d images.[5] This 3d image can also produce images in any plane of view.[4] The image can be rotated and manipulated by the doctor to be better able to detect tiny changes of structures within the body.[6] These fields, generated by passing electric currents through gradient coils, make the magnetic field strength vary depending on the position within the magnet. Because this makes the frequency of the released radio signal also dependent on its origin in a predictable manner, the distribution of protons in the body can be mathematically recovered from the signal, typically by the use of the inverse Fourier transform.

Protons in different tissues return to their equilibrium state at different relaxation rates. Different tissue variables, including spin density, T1 and T2 relaxation times, and flow and spectral shifts can be used to construct images.[7][8] By changing the settings on the scanner, this effect is used to create contrast between different types of body tissue or between other properties, as in fMRI and diffusion MRI.

MRI contrast agents may be injected intravenously to enhance the appearance of blood vessels, tumors or inflammation. Contrast agents may also be directly injected into a joint in the case of arthrograms, MRI images of joints. Unlike CT, MRI uses no ionizing radiation and is generally a very safe procedure. Nonetheless the strong magnetic fields and radio pulses can affect metal implants, including cochlear implants and cardiac pacemakers. There are many electronically activated devices that have approval from the US FDA to permit MRI procedures in patients under highly specific MRI conditions (see www.MRIsafety.com). In the case of cochlear implants, the US FDA has approved some implants for MRI compatibility. In the case of cardiac pacemakers, the results can sometimes be lethal,[9] so patients with such implants are generally not eligible for MRI.

Since the gradient coils are within the bore of the scanner, there are large forces between them and the main field coils, producing most of the noise that is heard during operation. Without efforts to damp this noise, it can approach 130 decibels (dB) with strong fields [10] (see also the subsection on acoustic noise).

MRI is used to image every part of the body, and is particularly useful for tissues with many hydrogen nuclei and little density contrast, such as the brain, muscle, connective tissue and most tumors.

MRI scans require a magnetic field with two properties, uniform field density and strength. The magnetic field cannot vary more than 1/10,000 of 1% and field strength ranges (depending on the scanner) from 0.2 to 3 teslas in strength in currently clinically used scanners, with research scanners investigating higher field strengths such as seven teslas. The lower field strengths can be achieved with permanent magnets, which are often used in "open" MRI scanners, for claustrophobic patients.[11] Higher field strengths can be achieved only with superconducting magnets.

Good luck!

what does ct scan stand for?

i was wondering what the ct in ct scan stands for and is it the same as a cat scan

Answer
CAT stands for Computerised Axial Tomography, CT is exactly the same but but just easier to say and that's a fact.

It uses X-rays but the source moves (tomography) around the body (axial) and the results are fed into a computer not film, the body moves slowly through the scanner and a scan is taken every centimetre depending on the part of the body that is being scanned.

The computer can then present the scan as a 'slice' or build up a 3D image depending on what's required.

Is there any software or online service that can translate a jpg of a 2D/3D barcode image to words?
That way I don't need to buy a $300 3D (PDF417) barcode scanner to do the job.
Oh, I see there is app for iphone to do such. I need one for PC Windows.

Answer
I believe this is what your looking for. Its called Barcode Creator 3.1 and I use it as a Tool other than "Creation" which i am sure you will too. This may not be 100% for you but it certainl something you didn't have before a a BC tool. However, if you can name some program(s) you are looking for I MAY be able to find it free.

take care

What software is there for creating your own Comics?

Isaac F

Im getting a MAC very soon and I wanted to know what I need software wise to help me out? I will be using a good camera and a good scanner to catch my comic shots. Anyone know any good programs for mac or any hardware to help me out?

Answer
There are any number of ways you can make a comic strip, from drawing it entirely with a pen or pencil on folded pieces of paper, to drawing it and then scanning and doing clean-up digitally, or doing the entire thing digitally. You can use any tools to string together sequential images in any way to make a comic. There are no rules, there are no limits.

If you're really interested in making a comic, you should definitely buy or take a trip to the library to take out Scott McCloud's "Making Comics." It's a great book and sequel to his "Understanding Comics" which not only goes over some of the tools and techniques of making comics, but deconstructs the concepts, theories, standards and practices of visual storytelling.

Best part is, the book about comics is a comic book itself!

http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/001441.php

Also, any Digital imaging suite like Adobe Photoshop can be used to make comics. Some free alternatives are Paint.NET and Gimp or Gimpshop.

http://www.getpaint.net/

http://www.gimpshop.com/

Kazu Kibuishi has a step-by-step tutorial on how he makes his webcomic, "Copper," on this site:

http://www.boltcity.com/workshop/copper_tutorial/

There are also some programs you can use that try to help making comics easier. Manga Studio is a popular choice for black and white comics. However, it's pretty pricey.

There's also TokyoPop's Manga Creator:

It's much much cheaper than Manga Studio, and easier to use. The dowside is that it has less features. It's up to you what you'd want to spring for.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/tokyopop-manga-creator-2

There's also Comic Book Creator 2, which is fairly cheap. Which usually means, easy to use but low on advanced features:

http://www.myplanetwide.com/products/detail/description.html?id=41

It's up to you to find out exactly what these programs can do and decide whether it's worth paying for that extra functionality.

If you're on a Mac, there's Comics Life. It should already be on your Mac, I think. If it's not, you can download a demo here:

What can i do and not do using a 3d scanner.
I assume if i wanted to I could scan someones batman figurine, but could i make a "batman movie" out of it?
Could i make a knockoff using their figureine scanned model?
Is there any reason using the scan of anything comerically is illegal in the united states?
I'm just worried because a 3d scanner would be pretty useless if you couldn't use the scans of anything commercially.

Answer
3d scanners are not used to copy or rip off designs from others
you make ur own character figureine and scan them and use them commercially

Why dont airports use dogs instead of those 3d body scanners?

BillsGold

Dogs could detect everything those scanners do and more. Why not make them standard at every airport gate? My own theory is that you cant make a lot of money from dogs so there's no lobbyists advocating for dogs. You can make money off of those scanners ($150,000 a machine?). Is our security being subverted by washington lobbyists?

Answer
If each team had several dogs all trained in detecting different substances, the handlers could simply walk the dogs along the line of waiting passengers and remove anyone the dogs "hit" on. Forget technology, let nature expose them. I agree. Dogs not scanners.

Jimmy

I want to make animated cartoons, but am not sure what software I need. What software is best to draw the characters and backgrounds? Once I draw the characters do I then put them into Adobe Flash to make a cartoon?

Answer
You can use any of these FREE Cartoon Animation Softwares.........

Pencil : http://www.pencil-animation.org/
Pencil is an animation/drawing software for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. It lets you create traditional hand-drawn animation (cartoon) using both bitmap and vector graphics. Pencil is free and open source.

Synfig Animation Studio : http://synfig.org/
Synfig is a powerful, industrial-strength vector-based open-source 2D animation software package, designed from the ground-up for producing feature-film quality animation with fewer people and resources.2D Animation has traditionally been very expensive because every frame must be drawn by hand. Even with today´s digital inking and painting software, the process still relies on individuals hand-drawing each frame. This laborious task is called "tweening".Synfig eliminates the task of manual tweening, producing smooth, fluid motion without the animator having to draw out each frame individually. This allows you to produce 2D animation with fewer people while producing art of a higher quality.

Tapptoons Linetester : http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/tapptoons/index.htm
The Tapptoons Linetester enables animators to use a scanner or video camera (with compatible capture card) to input animation images into a standard PC and edit their work, adding soundtrack and color if they wish and to output the result as a Windows AVI. Can be used for puppet animation as well as drawn animation.

eDrawings : http://www.edrawingsviewer.com/
eDrawings is a freeware utility which will give the user the power to view, create and share 3D models and 2D drawings. eDrawings offers unique capabilities like point-and-click animations that make it easy for anyone with a PC to interpret and understand 2D and 3D design data.

How do you make a laptop faster?

Q. Hi, i dont know anything about laptops and want to buy one, how do you make it run faster?

Thanks.

Answer
1. Run Defrag on the disk
2. Get SpyBot and clean up all spy-ware.
3. Use AVG free virus scanner; un-install McAfee or Norton they are both terribly slow
4. Disable any Windows Services you do not use
5. Disable any Windows start-up items (such as AOL toolbar, Quicktime startup, Yahoo Instant Messenger start-up..) you don't use
6. Upgrade you memory if under 2GB...if you don't have that much as have Windows Vista and don't want to pay the price of new memory, buy a USB stick of size 2GB and let Vista use it as extra memory
7. Run XP instead of Vista (a good bit faster)...or stop running Windows and run Linux instead (it's MUCH faster)
8. Turn off any fancy visual desktop themes (especially under XP)
9. If 3D graphics run slowly, buy a new video card (Nvidia 8600GT/ATI X1300 or better)
---------------------------
Only if you've done all the above and they fail to improve speed enough...should you consider buying a faster computer.
Don't bother overclocking, it will realistically only give a 10% difference in speed on most machines and will often ruin a machine over a couple of years, even if done "smartly".
