can I use a flat bed scanner to photograph a 3D object?

ben

Im not looking to photograph anything large, just 2"-3" tall. When I scan an object, anything touching the glass comes out clear, but anything 1/2" or more off the glass comes out blurred and dark. Is there a particular scanner out there that is known to scan objects well? Or is there some special techniques I can try to enhance my images quality? Thank you

Answer
Nope, sorry. Flatbed scanners are only focused on the glass with that .5 you discovered. You can make some cool images by rolling the thing along the motion of the scanning sensor that may look pretty groovy, but you cannot take a photo.
I'd walk into the closest camera shop and ask to see a camera and bring a card in with you to take the image home.

Answer
3D is a special process, you can't scan it.

How to make a java program with output a triangle of numbers?

Lindsey

Hey everyone, I'm trying to help a friend with his program as he is struggling in his java class. it has been awhile since I've used java and while I am close, the math isn't lining up.

We are both really close.

We are trying to create a triangle that looks like this if a user enters 5:
1
2 6
3 7 10
4 8 11 13
5 9 12 14 15

So far we got this:
1
2 6
3 7 8
4 8 9 11
5 9 10 12 15

Here is the code:

public static void triangle2(int n)
{

//check the input and return an error message if erronous input
if (n<1){
System.out.println("Please enter a value greater than or equal to 1.");
return;
}

int val=1;

for (int i=1; i<=n; i++)
{
System.out.printf("%3d",val);
int c = 1;
int y = i+(n-c);
for (int j=1; j<i; j++){
System.out.printf("%3d", y);
// y= y-j;
y = y+c;
c++;
}
System.out.println();
val++;
}
}

Thank you :D

Answer
Yes, you are close ... try ...

import java.util.Scanner;

public class triangle2
{
public static void triangle2(int n)
{

//check the input and return an error message if erronous input
if (n<1){
System.out.println("Please enter a value greater than or equal to 1.");
return;
}

int val=1;

for (int i=1; i<=n; i++)
{
System.out.printf("%3d",val);
int c = 1;
int y = i+(n-c);
for (int j=1; j<i; j++){
System.out.printf("%3d", y);
// y= y-j;
y = y+c;
c++;
}
System.out.println();
val++;
}
}

public static void main(String[]args) { // main function
int nsize = 0, i;

// Check for argument 1 number rows in triangle
if (args.length > 0) {
for(i=0; i<args[0].toString().length(); i++) {
if (args[0].substring(i,1).compareTo("0") >= 0 &&
args[0].substring(i,1).compareTo("9") <= 0) {
nsize = nsize;
} else if (!args[0].substring(i,1).equals("-")) {
nsize--;
}
}
if (nsize == 0) nsize = Integer.parseInt(args[0]);
}
if (nsize <= 0) {
Scanner inputscanner = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.print("How many rows are there in your triangle? ");
nsize = inputscanner.nextInt();
}
triangle2(nsize);
} // end of main function

}

what are computer inputs and out puts divices mention atleast 8 on each.?

Can you recommend a guide and software for making 3D objects?

Tomas

My idea is to take photos of bones (scapula, femur...) from different angles, run them through a software which will somehow combine them and make a 3D object in space, that i can rotate and add annotation (tags?, description for different parts of bone)

I am not a programmer and i need something easy.

Do you have any ideas? :)

Answer
photos are 2d. you can get depth, but not 3d. you need a 3d scanner like a next engine 3d scanner they run $3000. the web site is pretty cool, it will show you how to scan and print. the printer in the web site is is a year old and now they have much better printers with more options on materials available.
for software you will need a program like Solidworks. it is #1 right now for 3d. it is what Pixiar animation use and many large companies. there are other programs, but after my research for myself most will not talk to the scanner. down side is cost and you need a pretty big system to run it.
then if you want you can send it to a 3d printer for a few dollars you will get a actual 3d sculpture. there are several 3d printers, but after looking at many the 'shapesways gallery' they can print in plastics, metal, ceramics.
this stuff is super cool. this should lead you in the right direction. these printers have only been available for public about a year, but they have been around since the 80s.

Would it be possible to make a 3d scanned video?

Cameron

Would it be possible to make a 3d scanned video, not just a picture? Where you can see all 360 degrees of someone for example dancing. Like could you get a ton of camera's and put them in all different directions and then be able to the footage together. Does this technology exist?
Thanks

Answer
They already have this technology to film in this way, it is no different than the technology to do the stop motion rotation. The problem is we do not have the technology to actively use anything generated like this. The problem is this...

36 cameras at 10 deg increments will give you a 360 view of the person, so what this means is you would need a monitor which has 18 double sided monitors at 10 deg increments around a central shaft (or 36 screens total) with 36 separate inputs just to view this video in a fixed location monitor, these do exist by the way, and you would see the video output based upon where you are located around the monitor.

The more cameras and monitors you have set up like this the more it will appear to be 3D.

Now for the problem of your idea. You are wanting to generate a real time 3D video out of the footage, this is physically impossible with our technology level, we can't even generate a true 3D image in the first place, much less a video of it for play back. People who work with 3D graphics software and play 3D games have seen what you are wanting to do, this is because they are working with 3D objects being generated on the fly, but when they output this information it is 2D video, there is no way to output a real time 3D object which can be viewed from any angle at the viewers request, the data generated in this manner would be insane to try to have a permanent copy generated for reviewing, when this is done in games and software once it has been viewed it is lost.

Does this type of camera exist?

Joe Shmoe

A camera that uses radar to scan an object and then produce a 3d model that you can put into a video game.

Answer
you would use a camera and sensor setup for this, most used setup consists of sonar sensors or lasers to scan a 3d image and software to convert a final 3d image for objects. there is alot of new techniques for this, the one i use is sonar and laser for my robotic apps and the laser is most accurate and you can use a laser pointer for it. here is a site i use to keep up with affordable approaches. you should find everything you need here:

I'm going to buy a laptop with no cd/dvd drive in it, what USB cd/dvd drive should I get?

Weather Gi

I want to buy a Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 laptop for my birthday and this will also be the laptop I will take to college next year and it doesn't have the drive where you put in disks. What is a good USB cd/dvd drive that I should buy and is compatible with the laptop so I can download stuff from CD's, watch movies, and also play the Sims 3 games (lol), etc...

Thanks!

Answer
I looked up the laptop that you are planning to buy and it has both a USB 3.0 and a USB 2.0 port, so basically any external cd/dvd drive that works via USB will work.
If you are not going to burn disks but only want to do the things you mentioned then all you need is a ROM drive and that is great because those are the least expensive. Here is one that reads Blue Ray disks and is under $25: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2C50YW4972

Where you buy is perhaps more important than brand name because even top name brands will sometimes have a defect and it's just convenient to buy from a place with a good return/exchange policy, so Best Buy is great if one is near you, but if you will be buying online and using mail, then Newegg.com and Tigerdirect.com are at the least trusted and highly reputable businesses.

Here is a convenient link to an external Blueray DVD/CD burner: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/8x-external-usb-2-0-3d-blu-ray-disc-double-layer-dvd-177rw-cd-rw-drive/3794001.p?id=1218432163829&skuId=3794001&st=External%20blue%20ray&cp=1&lp=1

It is surprisingly easy for your stuff to get "lost" or stolen while on the go, so even though the external drive is easily portable, it's just better to have a policy of leaving it at home or in the dorm where you use it and secure it with a cable lock or disguise it with play-doh and don't carry it in the same case as your laptop. That's just my experience.

Something else you might consider buying as an accessory is a docking station. This lets you use multiple monitors, wired ethernet, external speakers, multiple external drives, keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, etc. all set up on your desktop and you just plug in one USB 3.0 port and it's all set up and just unplug that one port to go in a flash.
