Where can I buy a low cost 3d scanner?

Al

I need to scan in some parts to add to a CAD model. I'm really looking for something that's plug and play, where I drop the object into the scanner and it automatically puts it into a CAD packge. Any ideas?

Answer
What do you consider low cost? Good ones run around $10,000 (e.g., Roland) but you can find some for around $2,500 (e.g., Nextengine).

Do you have any conscientious scruples against exposing your naked body to the public?

Christine

Well, are you going to boycott airports like I am? Will you file lawsuits, protest outside airports, go to major US cities with picket signs? Or will you bow down to your elite masters and let them reduce you to dirt and treat you the way Nazi Officers treated Jews (stripped women, humiliated them while family members watched - what's the difference if a machine does it? And besides, do you honestly believe that they don't have backup copies of your naked bodies in their registries).

In early 2009, Homeland Security funded over $7 billion dollars to have naked body scanners implemented in ALL major US airports (over 200) by 2010. And then magically, RIGHT before 2010, Mr. Failed Umar Underwear Bomber gets onto an airplane without a passport and is helped on board by what witnesses describe as a "Caucasian man in a well-dressed suit" and now we're hearing about the necessity of body scanners in airports, and as well all know, when it's normalized in airports, it makes its way everywhere else. In the Netherlands, they're already looking into MOBILE body scanners...

To deny an open conspiracy is to deny that 2 + 2 equals 4.

Answer
"Mr. Failed Umar Underwear Bomber gets onto an airplane without a passport and is helped on board by what witnesses describe as a "Caucasian man in a well-dressed suit""

Im calling conspiracy theory on that...

I do have scruples with exposing myself in public. However these machines dont see through your clothes THAT way, they generate a 3D relief map of your body that looks close to anyone else. They dont see blemishes or "parts" they would only see a little 3D bump. They have released pictures of the software working on these scanners, no where is it generating inappropriate images of anyone. And how could they catalogue it unless there was due reason and if they had your name?

what does ct scan stand for?

i was wondering what the ct in ct scan stands for and is it the same as a cat scan

Answer
CAT stands for Computerised Axial Tomography, CT is exactly the same but but just easier to say and that's a fact.

It uses X-rays but the source moves (tomography) around the body (axial) and the results are fed into a computer not film, the body moves slowly through the scanner and a scan is taken every centimetre depending on the part of the body that is being scanned.

The computer can then present the scan as a 'slice' or build up a 3D image depending on what's required.

Where can I find an aluminum-framed PC?

Q. I've been searching Google for quite awhile, and I can't seem to find any PCs that have an aluminum frame. I want it to be similar in style to the new aluminum macbook pro, but I don't want it to be a macbook.
I'm looking for a moderately powerful laptop.

Answer
You can get it custom made if you just buy a pc, take off the plastic frame, scan it in a 3D scanner, and send it to an aluminum manufacturer and have them build it for you.

Does anyone know anything about x-ray microtomography?

Q. Hello! Please help me and my group with our assignment at uni! We have been asked to write a 3-page essay about x-ray microtomography. But it seems rather difficult to find information about that topic on the internet and in published texts. We would like any information available! Thanks a lot!

Answer
Microtomography, like tomography, uses x-rays to create cross-sections of a 3D-object that later can be used to recreate a virtual model without destroying the original model. The term micro is used to indicate that the pixel sizes of the cross-sections are in the micrometer range. This also means that the machine is much smaller in design compared to the human version and is used to model smaller objects.

These scanners are typically used for small animals (in-vivo scanners), biomedical samples, foods, microfossils, and other studies for which minute detail is desired.

The first X-ray microtomography system was conceived and built by Jim Elliott in the early 1980s. The first published X-ray microtomographic images were reconstructed slices of a small tropical snail, with pixel size about 50 micrometers. (JC Elliott and SD Dover. X-ray microtomography. J. Microscopy 126, 211-213, 1982.)

In 2005, Skyscan, a company that produces scientific instruments, introduced a nano-ct scanner, introducing the concept of Nanotomography. Other companies producing such scanners include Xradia for materials and semiconductor applications and Scanco Medical AG for medical applications.

Working principle

* Imaging system

Fan beam reconstruction
The fan-beam system is based on a 1-dimensional x-ray detector and an electronic x-ray source, creating 2-dimensional cross-sections of the object. Typically used in human Computed tomography systems.
Cone beam reconstruction
The cone-beam system is based on a 2-dimensional x-ray detector (camera) and an electronic x-ray source, creating projection images that later will be used to reconstruct the image cross-sections.

* Sample holder system

The sample stays still, and the camera and electronic x-ray source rotates.
This is best used for in-vivo animal scans, and other situations where the sample should remain unmoving, but is more expensive.
E.g.SkyScan-1076 or SkyScan-1078 or Scanco VivaCT 40 scanners for sample details.
The sample rotates, and the camera and electronic x-ray source stays still.
Much cheaper to build, since moving the sample requires fewer components than moving the camera and the electronic x-ray source.

* Open/Closed systems

Open x-ray system
In an open system, x-rays may escape or leak out, thus the operator must stay behind a shield, have special protective clothing, or operate the scanner from a distance or a different room. Typical examples of these scanners are the human versions, or designed for big objects.
E.g. Scanco medical XtremeCT scanner.
Closed x-ray system
In a closed system, x-ray shielding is put around the scanner so the operator can put the scanner on his desk or special table. Although the scanner is shielded, care must be taken and the operator usually carries a dose meter, since x-rays have a tendency to be absorbed by metal and then re-emitted like an antenna. Although a typical scanner will produce a relatively harmless volume of x-rays, repeated scannings in a short timeframe could pose a danger.
Closed systems tend to become very heavy because lead is used to shield the x-rays. Therefore, the smaller scanners only have a small space for samples.
E.g. SkyScan-1076 or SkyScan-1078 or Scanco mCT 40 or Scanco mCT 80 scanners

Typical use
* Biomedical

* Both dead and alive (in vivo) rat and mouse scanning.
* Human skin samples, small tumors, mice bone for osteoporosis research.

See in vivo microCT scanners for scanning examples.

* Electronics

Small electronic components. E.g. DRAM IC in plastic case.

* Microdevices

E.g. spray nozzle

* Composite materials and metallic foams

E.g. composite material with glass fibers 10 to 12 micrometres in diameter

* Polymers, plastics

E.g. plastic foam

* Diamonds

E.g. detecting defects in a diamond and finding the best way to cut it.

* Food and seeds

* E.g. piece of chocolate cake, cookies
* 3-D Imaging of Foods Using X-Ray Microtomography [1]

* Wood and paper

E.g. piece of wood to visualize year periodicity and cell structure

* Building materials

E.g. concrete after loading.

* Geology

E.g. sandstone

* Microfossils

E.g. bentonic foraminifers

* Space

E.g. Locating Stardust-like particles in aerogel using x-ray techniques [2]

* Others

E.g. cigarettes

* Stereo images

Visualizing with blue and green or blue filters to see depth

Java program, how do i remove all of a certain integer using arrays?

BB

i get arraylists but i'm completely lost when it comes to arrays
so far i have this (see code)
but it doesn't work and i don't know what i'm doing :(
how do i get the numbers into the array
i have to remove the zeroes and then reprint the array with no spaces...

import java.io.File;
import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.Scanner;

public class RemoveZero {
private static Scanner scan;
static int num [] = new int [100];

public static int[] readInArray(String filePath) {
try {
scan = new Scanner(new File(filePath));
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
return null;
}

private static int[] removeAndShift(int[] num, int index) {
int temp;
while (scan.hasNext())
temp = scan.nextInt();
int num1 [] = {temp};
return num1;

if (temp ==0)
num1.addInt(temp);
else
return num1;
}

public static void printArray(int[] num) {}

//"C:/Documents and Settings/10wangjessie/Desktop/AP COMPUTER SCIENCe/lab-5-data-file-compact.txt"
public static void main(String[] args) {
RemoveZero zero = new RemoveZero();
zero.readInArray();
zero.printArray();
}
}
how do i scan the integers into the array because it is from a file?

Answer
[EDIT] You should be able to use the Scanner class to pull in the numbers from the file in the same manner you would pull them from the keyboard, or a String.

I don't know the format of the data in the file, but you do, so select your methods in order to read appropriately based on what that input will be. Try something like this:

String filename = "C:\...";
try
{
file = new Scanner( new FileInputStream( filename ) );
for(int i=0 ; file.hasNextLine() && i<someArray.length ; i++ )
someArray[i] = Integer.parseInt( file.nextLine() );
}
catch( FileNotFoundException e)
{
System.out.println( "File not found or could not be opened.\nPress enter to continue." );
(new Scanner(System.in)).nextLine();
}

[/EDIT]

I'm a little confused about what you are shooting for, but here is an example of what I think you are asking.

public class RemoveZero
{
public static int[] removeZeros( int[] toRemove )
{
//make a copy of the provided array so as to not mutate it in case it is important
int[] temp = new int[toRemove.length];
for( int i=0 ; i<toRemove.length ; i++ ) temp[i] = toRemove[i];
toRemove = temp;

//locations in the array we are reading from and writing to
int source , destination;

//for each source index, if it is not a zero, write it to a destination index
for( source = destination = 0 ; source < toRemove.length ; source++ )
if( toRemove[source] != 0 )
toRemove[destination++] = toRemove[source];

//create a new array of the appropriate length, copy all relevant values over
int[] toReturn = new int[destination];
for( int i=0 ; i<destination ; i++ )
toReturn[i] = toRemove[i];

return toReturn;
}

//just prints the array out
public static void printArray(int[] num) { for( int i : num ) System.out.printf( "%3d," , i ); System.out.println(); }

//driver
public static void main(String[] args)
{
//random sample data
int[] toRemove = new int[]{ 48, 18, 0, 25, 52, 14, 0, 93, 90, 65, 66, 95, 81, 0, 76, 59, 79, 19, 76, 12 };

//print before and after removing zeros
System.out.print( "Pre:\t" );
printArray( toRemove );

System.out.print( "Post:\t" );
printArray( removeZeros(toRemove) );
}
}

Embarrassing question about tablets?

Q. Okay, so I'm a retired person. I use my laptop for email, internet, banking, buying stuff, etc. - pretty basic. I have wireless access in my home. I know NOTHING of how a tablet works. I want to buy a tablet for a friend who's quite broke. I doubt if she has the income to afford the monthly access for connection to a computer. I know you can use the internet on smartphones. Can you use a tablet without having internet access? I know I sound like an idiot - I'm even embarrassed to go to Best Buy and ask in person. Any info would be appreciated.

Answer
There is nothing to be embarrassed about..

I have the 4 main tablet group or from the main 4 operating system OS:
an amazon kindle, an iPad from apple, a Samsung tablet that runs on Android OS and a Windows 8.1 Acer iconia tablet..

For your friend, I would recommend the Apple iPad as the first choice, an Android device as a second choice (cheaper price), tablet PC if you (or your friend) want a regular computer with regular functions (but it is also the most expensive) and Amazon Kindle as the last choice..

And they all do not have to be connected to the internet in order for them to work..
But you need the internet connection to gain access to the 'App store', should you wish to install new apps (software) or get the latest updates..
And of course, you'd need the internet access if you try to access internet-based app like internet browser, the Facebook app or the Youtube app..

Also many of those free apps (freeware) that you download from the app store require internet connection in order for them to work (because the freeware is paid by you watching their ads), which is something that is more common in Android apps than others..
Many of those free apps (games mostly) are rendered useless without internet connection..

My number one tablet is still the windows 8.1 tablet PC..
I love it because it runs my windows tablet just like my desktop computer..
Unfortunately, windows tablets require a lot of patience and a lot of know how.. things that my mom lack and make her frustrated with computers.. and they are the most pricy among all tablets I have (it ranges between 500 to 1200 US dollars depending on the make and the model of the tablet PC)

I can ran those familiar software to me like PowerPoint and Microsoft Word, even CorelDraw and PhotoShop from my Acer tablet..
but it doesn't have to be Acer, the choice of the tablet make (or brand) depends on the availability and the support nearby (around my house, I can see Toshiba and Acer repair shop almost everywhere)..

IPad comes second, the iPad has more collection of mature apps (not baby apps seen in kindle and most android apps) that really stands out..
in particular the iMovie and movie effects, like 'action movie'..

It is actually my mom's favorite.. she loves that thing and she's on it all the time..

IPad belong to a group of devices called iOS devices, like iPod, iphone and iPad.. and the iPad has many models according to how old is it: iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3 (but has the official name 'the iPad'), and iPad mini.. .. .. and I believe that the latest tablet is called 'iPad Air'..
iOS devices have far more accessories than Android devices.. and I am not talking about bags, chargers or protective covers only..
I am talking about, remote controlled helicopters, remote control cars and robotic arms, 3D scanners, Stereo systems etc..

IPad, iPhones and iOS devices are generally associated with quality and slightly higher cost.. but still i prefer them over the Android devices at any given day..

Android devices biggest advantage is the price, they are cheaper than iPad.. and many apps (software) in the Android app store are free..
The leading android tablets are from Samsung's Galaxy class.. and you can go as cheap as 40 US dollars tablets from Huawei and other cheap Chinese tablets (but I highly do not recommend you to buy any of those cheap stuff, and aim for Samsung products)..

iOS and Androids share a number of similar apps (not all).. i.e. you can get some of those apps in iPad's (Apple app store), but they are usually free on Android app store which is always popular with kids (sometimes the catch is to see ads and links to buy things whenever you play those games)..

My mom uses Samsung Galaxy Note 2 that uses Android OS, and she hates it very much..
she hates of having too much controls in the menu, and how the buttons jump from one area of the screen to another (when she presses OK and confirm her choice).. but most of all, she feels cheated when she gets too much ads on her free apps, and some of those apps stop working when you are away from WiFi..

Amazon Kindle (I believe that I have the old 5th generation), is in a class on its own..it is the cheapest and the easiest tablet to own and have.. but it is mainly meant for reading books and magazines..
But you really can not do much of it..
Frankly I bought that thing because I thought that I would pick up the hobby of book reading, you know expanding myself.. but I really do not know what to do with it, except it is a fancy paper weight..

to recap.. I would recommend an iPad generally, Android tablets are generally cheaper, tablet PC are most expensive but has more familiar computer function, and finally the Kindle is not a big thing, yet..
all the best..

Human anatomy project?

Q. well i am in a group of four and we have to teach the class for 30 minutes and i want to make it intresting. The subject were doing it on is Digestion. So i need lesson plans or diagrams anything would help. Also i wanted to do something like bring in stuff or how to get a laugh out of the class while were teaching, so i need tips or something

Answer
here some x-rays you can use to show how food enters and exits the body from swallowing to pooing, the images are taken by getting the patient to swallow a powdered based drink called barium. barium is a dense material which allows doctors to investigate whether your insides are working properly.

swallowing (food entering mouth, going down oesophagus into stomach):

http://www.radiographicceu.com/article23.html

here is a youtube video of a barium swallow in real time, this person has somesort of oesophagile reflux - this were food travels back up toward the mouth instead of going into stomach.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCQ_MrhhGvI

this is the stomach, the arrow points to were the oesophagus meets the stomach:

http://www.szote.u-szeged.hu/radio/nyelocs/anyel6b.htm

This one is called a small bowel enema, a tube (which you can see on the x-ray) is inserted down the oesophagus into the small bowel. this is were food goes after the stomach.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/36/123159727_900bab501a_o.jpg

This one is called a barium enema, this image is of the large bowel, this is were food goes after the small bowel... after this, its time for your food to meet the toliet

http://www.medicine.cu.edu.eg/english/students/study/x_ray_surgery/xray/intestine/141_normal_ba_enema.jpg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF_1sUYHL5M - the colon (large bowel)

heres another one

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BVY5qfZKwk&feature=related - again 3d colon taken using a CT scanner, a ct scanner is a hi-tech x-ray mechine which rotates around the body also called cat scan.

if you talk about the structures of each segment/body piece, you might be able to distinguish them on the x-rays

bored now so hope this is ok etc...

3D modeling software of human body. Does anyone know which software is used for this?

curious

I work on AutoCAd and I want to move into the medical field. I have heard that 3D modeling is used for diagnosis, line of treatment and also for simulation of elective surgery. How do I get more info on this so I can move into that field? Thanks

Answer
well, you could use a lot of softwares like Maya and 3Dsmax to create stunning 3D models of any kind.
In the medical filed, 3D visualization using these softwares are done extensively for educational purposes.

But for diagmnostics and treatment, machines and its in-built softwares does the the 3D job. these machines have 3D scanners which automaticly creates 3D models of any scanned surfaces on the fly.

3d printing images..?

Q. how do you get the picture of the object you want to print.lets say i want to print plastic parts for motorcycles how do i get the image of that model of the bike or the picture of it

Answer
you would have to take photos of object, scan views of object, compile into 3D rendering, then process that image through 3D printer,

so for a motor cycles handle grip,
you take photos of; top , ends, sides , bottom

Portable 3D Scanners

place in 3D renderer, and export design,

Strata Foto 3D CX

Is this stuff secure to download? Its really cool, But i have the doubt!?

thevampire

well its a screen saver but its really cool. I just don't know whether i should download it or not.. has anyone ever been to this site? and if you have could you tell me if its secure or not? Please!! *_* TT.TT HEre is the site.... http://3dfiction.com/others.htm

Answer
Don't ever download 3D desktops. They are usually riddled with spyware. As for screensavers... do some research on trusted sites and go there only. I'd recommend
http://www.download.com
Also, don't ever do anything that requires you to use Active Desktop as that is really insecure.
You can always download it, then scan it with some virus scanners, trojan scanners, and spyware/adware scanners to scheck its safety.

What does the CAT in CAT SCAN mean?

guitarjas

Answer
Computed tomography (CT), originally known as computed axial tomography (CAT or CT scan) and body section roentgenography, is a medical imaging method employing tomography where digital geometry processing is used to generate a three-dimensional image of the internals of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation. The word "tomography" is derived from the Greek tomos (slice) and graphia (describing). CT produces a volume of data which can be manipulated, through a process known as windowing, in order to demonstrate various structures based on their ability to block the x-ray beam. Although historically generated were in the axial or transverse plane (orthogonal to the long axis of the body), modern scanners allow this volume of data to be reformatted in various planes or even as volumetric (3D) representations of structures.

Although most common in healthcare, CT is also used in other fields, e.g. nondestructive materials testing.

did any one know any thing about <ct scanning> plz send me books as u can?

What software is there for creating your own Comics?

Isaac F

Im getting a MAC very soon and I wanted to know what I need software wise to help me out? I will be using a good camera and a good scanner to catch my comic shots. Anyone know any good programs for mac or any hardware to help me out?

Answer
There are any number of ways you can make a comic strip, from drawing it entirely with a pen or pencil on folded pieces of paper, to drawing it and then scanning and doing clean-up digitally, or doing the entire thing digitally. You can use any tools to string together sequential images in any way to make a comic. There are no rules, there are no limits.

If you're really interested in making a comic, you should definitely buy or take a trip to the library to take out Scott McCloud's "Making Comics." It's a great book and sequel to his "Understanding Comics" which not only goes over some of the tools and techniques of making comics, but deconstructs the concepts, theories, standards and practices of visual storytelling.

Best part is, the book about comics is a comic book itself!

Also, any Digital imaging suite like Adobe Photoshop can be used to make comics. Some free alternatives are Paint.NET and Gimp or Gimpshop.

Kazu Kibuishi has a step-by-step tutorial on how he makes his webcomic, "Copper," on this site:

There are also some programs you can use that try to help making comics easier. Manga Studio is a popular choice for black and white comics. However, it's pretty pricey.

There's also TokyoPop's Manga Creator:

It's much much cheaper than Manga Studio, and easier to use. The dowside is that it has less features. It's up to you what you'd want to spring for.

There's also Comic Book Creator 2, which is fairly cheap. Which usually means, easy to use but low on advanced features:

It's up to you to find out exactly what these programs can do and decide whether it's worth paying for that extra functionality.

If you're on a Mac, there's Comics Life. It should already be on your Mac, I think. If it's not, you can download a demo here:

What is the likeliness of getting a gau-19?

Q. Like how much $$$ would one need to order the d*mn thing?
How hard it is to aquire one in the first place?
And what kind of federal license would you need to have to own it?
Lastly, what process would need to be carried out to aquire this license?

I'm guessing a kind of military license, $5,000, and a due process to order, ship, and receive as well as shipping payment. General Dynamics doesn't just hand out Gau-19s to just anyone, although that would be pretty convenient. And i'm guessing extensive training (military) and testing to aquire this particular license. I'm also guessing that from its little popularity and being widely unkown that it may be easier than i think, still difficult, but easier to aquire than that of an m134.

below, I get a little off here, so read if you please but you don't have to cause it's not part of my question, just some facts and links, i'd rather have my questions answered.

My reasons for wanting to aquire this weapon is for a last defense for when the tyranny of our government reaches to the point of an absolute dictatorship and we merge into the rest of the worlds
revolution in the act to rebuild nations, that this will help defend myself and my family, an ar-15 won't cut it. Also, because of its 3 barrels and ability to change the R.O.F. of the weapon, can help preserve ammo than its 6 barreled counterpart (m134), and speaking of ammo, it has a larger round than its counterpart making the gau-19 (50-BMG) better than the m134 (7.62 x 51). And although the .50 is more expensive than the other, because of the lower fire rate of the gau-19, in the long run, i save, cause its the m134's 5,000 rpm Vs. the gau-19's 1,000 rpm rate (or selectable 1,250 rpm, 1,300 rpm, and 2,000 rpm). So as you can see here, my reasons are very good reasons. My final reason is because, admit it, it's an awesome weapon, the machine in my favorite game series Halo for the XBox is modeled after the gau-19.

gau-19 is the 4th one down

Answer
It might be possible to purchase one from a foreign military entity. You can buy MIG-29 fighter jets from former soviet republic air forces. Some are for sale for around 5 million dollars. You might not be able to get a GAU-19 since they do not just sell them to anyone. If you are really that determined to get one you could use 3d scanners to help reverse engineer the GAU-19 in 50 caliber and produce one for yourself. If in the end with all of the legal paperwork ,and tax stamps you can have a fully automatic GAU-19. If you cannot get your hands on a GAU-19 you could make something similar that could do the same job ,but reverse engineering an GAU-19 is probably your best bet since you probably will not be able to get one imported or purchase one from general dynamics. Remember you will have to get the proper manufacturing licenses from the ATF.
