Answer
If your PC is slowing down, it can be the results of two things
( Software Problems AND / OR Hardware Capacity )

For the problems (software) part, here are a few suggestions:

As you use torrent software, malware may have invaded your computer, get this free scanner to check for it: http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-amp-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html?tag=mncol&cdlPid=10861988

*Don't worry about the name, it destroys the malware not the computer*

Also get yourself this FREE Firewall/Antivirus combo called Comodo Internet Security: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Take the one on the left (the free version) *This is the one I use and it is good*

Get the free Process Explorer v11.3 to see what is loading when your computer starts and help control them: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Also get the free Startup Delayer that delays the start of some programs for faster booting:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/startdelay.html

To nuke rubbish, read this article: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=547 ,
use this free program: http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/home
and a good powerful free cleaning program that I use: http://www.glaryutilities.com/gu.html

Between those 3 links, you should be able to clean and speed your computer.

( A word of caution, with programs this powerful, be sure to read all instructions twice so that you can fix it once ! )

The Java Runtime Environment can cause slowdowns if you made updates, you should use a free program I use myself called JavaRa to get the latest version of the JRE and remove the older versions.

Here is a short explanation on JavaRa and Java:

JavaRa is a simple tool that does a simple job: it checks if your computer has the latest version of the JRE. If the version you have installed has been superseded by a newer version the program will download and install this newer version for you, by running Java's update program. JavaRa then allows you to remove all possible older versions of this program. This will ensure that the security of your computer is enhanced and extra space on your hard disk is created.

Java software in general and the Java JRE in particular allow you to run applications called 'applets' that are written in the Java programming language. You probably have Java JRE installed on your computer because these applets allow you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, view images in 3D, as well as many others.

Find more information here: http://raproducts.org/javara.html
And the download link on this page: http://raproducts.org/

And now the suggestions for the capacity (hardware) part:

If you have the means to buy a second internal drive (if you don't have one already) and if your system has the space to put it in, I would advice to go that way.

If you cannot add an internal, go for an external !

After installing (if you decide to follow my suggestion), you should follow this guide to move the My Documents folder to the new drive:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/how_to_move_my_documents.htm

That should free quite a bit of space from the original drive.

If you made your own document folders (.doc, .xls, .ppt, jpg, .png, .gif OR any other type of document) outside of the normal structure, move these also to the new drive with a file manager.

So here we have it, I hope this will help guide you to a faster machine

Good luck

Cheers

Will 3D mmorpgs mess up my computer in this situation?

Star

Hello,
I have a Windows Vista 64-bit notebook with a huge memory, 4.00GB RAM, and a 2.53 GHz processor (I don't know what all that means, but i know it's very good).
The only problem is I have a sucky graphics card for games (from what I've heard): Mobile Intel(R) GMA 4500MHD... Since i have no idea what that means, it has a total available graphics memory of 1759MB, and a dedicated and system video memory of 64MB.
I haven't played any games on this laptop yet because my parents bought it for me for school and expect me to have it for at least 2 years. My dad is a worry freak and thinks if I play any games, it will mess up the computer...
I tried learning a little about graphic cards and it seems if I play 3D mmorpgs (like Tales Runner or Anarchy Online), mine will not be good enough...
I was wondering if
1. I can still play the game and
2. if it will mess up my computer in any way.

It seems I wrote way too much, but I wanted to be specific.. Sorry!
Thank you so much in advance for helping a computer idiot like me! ^^
Merry Christmas, by the way!

Answer
No playings MMORPG game on you pc should be fine. Many of them are played in browser and thus not graphics heavy in order to reach a broad range of pc users with various types of gfx cards, memory, etc. Games will not mess up you computer. Since your graphics card is not that great and you have ton of memory [not really sure why?] you will be able to play a lot of games on you pc. They will most likely be laggy but you can turn down the settings in the video preferences of most pc games. Just check and see what the minimum system requirements are for the game you want to play and compare it with your PCs specs.

You probably want to get a good anti-virus and spyware scanner as well. If you get on the internet at all, I assume you do since you posted on Y!, then this is essential. Scan everything, and scan it often. This will help ease your fathers conscious.

Bah Humbug!
